Takila and I went to a Chinese Buffet for dinner tonight. The food has always been good and the price not to bad. Well tonight we were sitting in a booth and I was seated facing the Chinese waitress station thing, you know where they get your pop, coffee and stuff. I just happened to look up at the waitress as she was leaving her station with someones pop and witnessed this chick pick her nose with her pinky finger. What made it worse was I watched her look at her finger when she was done with the pick as if she had the prize out of a box of Cracker Jack box or something then wipe her finger on her smock! I was done eating right then and there. I was gonna say something to her as she walked past like "don't you think you should go wash your hands now" but Takila gets pissed when I say stuff like that. When I see chit like that I feel compelled to say something. So I just told Takila I would never go there again. When she brought the check over I wouldn't touch it. I had Takila grab it and pay for dinner.

Talk about loosing your dinner.. I even told the waitress and manager.. that I didn't want to eat there.. tried to get my money back and that's when they acted like they had no idea what I was talking about... so I stood outside and let people know going in that they had a serious infestation.. not to mention their chow main looked 3 days old.. so.. I know what ya mean talk about gross.. Blech.. almost as bad as eggnog... . or cottage cheese.. don't you people know it's rotten?? lol Roxy

That is why my young bride and I almost always eat at home. I think if a person really knew what happened with "all" our food we would have trouble eating any of it. Maybe I should find out. That may help me slim down, or not......MrP

Jim, that happens at "all" the resaraunts bud. Some places even drop the food on the floor, pick it back up and serve it to you. (gotta be ok, the floor was just mopped)..... wonder what other areas that mop was used in?? lol

As others have said, it's hardly unique to Chinese restaurants. The local newspaper every-so-often, prints health department inspection reports of restaurants in the area. A McDonalds got flagged for no soap in the hand wash dispenser, overly soiled food prep area, and "heavy fly population". Other places have gotten bad reports for food stored at improper temperatures, toxic materials (cleaners, inseticides) stored with food, rodent infestations, etc. Upscale restaurants seem to just as bad as greasy spoons. You take your chance in any restaurant.

When I was delivering bottle gas I delivered Co2 to restaurants for their beverages. All restaurants are gross in the back. I've seen a lot of critters and nasty looking kitchens that make me just want to stay at home and eat.

Chinese eateries are always interesting *L*. I've never found anything more odd than a cooked roach belly up in my food or seen anything worse than a cook smoking with a dangling ash over the food. However, I was with a buddy once when he found the tip of a finger, complete with bandage in his food. That one even got to me a bit ( after I quit laughing at my friends expression) and I used to eat lunch while skinning roadkill carcasses back when I worked in a museum. *LOL*....Mel

Im truly one of those that says "if it tastes good, Im gonna eat it no matter what the ingredients." Im positive things like that happen all the time and we just dont know it. Again, if I dont know it then Im not going to put myself in a plastic bubble my whole life and worry about it. On the other hand, if I SAW the chick pick her nose and wipe it on her smock, I'd be a little disgusted. Hairs in food is pretty gross too. One time I was at a chinese restaurant and my little sister found a piece of screwy looking metal in her meal.......turns out it was a piece of metal scouring pad. Needless to say her meal was free. That same restaurant just burned down the other day LOL

You'd be surprised at how unclean EVERY restaurant is! We didn't get sick from eating at the Chinese restaurant, E-dog. But I got sick as a dog from eating at Ron's Place where we can actually see them cooking our food! Either you can stay home and never eat out, or, you take a chance. Even the most prestigious places don't follow all the health dept. rules!

Ohhhh MAN! That sucks a big one! LOL
It's horrible to be in a place you think may be on the okay side of the health department then you see something like this! That'll put me off my feed for a while...
But...the truth is...there's no place perfect. Some are just better than others. We are all at the mercy of the people that work there. I can imagine that had E or Takila spoke up about this to the staff, one of two things may have happened... 1 - suddenly...no one speaks good english or 2 - no one speaks good english and the person that did it is family & they're not gonna say anything anyway.
I watch the health ratings in our papers all the time. Chinese and Mexican places appear to get lower ratings on the average than others. I really believe it's because families tend to work together and standards are lowered because of stress & overwork issues. I know what kind of a place I have, and what kind of people work for me and I will eat there at all times no matter who's on the line. ( I couldn't say that 10 years ago when the majority of guys in my kitchen were white lazy asses that eventually got the boot.) I'm being totally serious kids.
Health ratings serve a purpose but can also be missleading. I've gotten near perfect scores and had some good gigs on my numbers for other things. The best compliment I've had was when the Health inspector told me not to get upset with my score, he'd eat there any day of the week. I calmed down after that.
If you are truley concerned about this issue, consider this...
Go to corporate rest. chains. (Once again...not perfect but better procedures than average Mom & Pops places.) Applebees - Red Lobsters - Olive Gardens or those Micky D's that are corp. owned...not franchised out. Managers are usually given perks for good inspections or keeping things within certain boundries and they tend to run a tighter ship.
Once I was in a place having lunch. We placed our orders & had a drink while waiting. The kitchen pass window was right in front of us & there was a pretty good sized man on the line. Summertime...& hot as hell in the kitchen. (bald headed guy with a sweatband) As I watched him...I started to get queazy cause all the sweat was drippin down his head & sometimes he'd move fast & it woudl fly. Next thing I knew...he sneezed. Snot flew everywhere. I saw him wipe his nose with his hand & then lower it. It looked like on a towel around his waist. I started to tell my girlfriend I sure hoped it wasn't our food he was working on when he puts the plates in the window & hits the bell. Waitress grabs the plates & puts them in front of of with me yelling..." aw HELL NO! I lowered my voice just enough so we wouldn't be tossed for disturbing the peace and explained. I told her we wouldn't be paying for the meal or the drinks, but I did leave her a nice tip!
Sometime I'll tell ya bout the cockroach my husband crunched on from a glass of pop! LOL

THis is why I like everything cooked well done. No one ever knows. I knew someone who got an huge tapeworm from eating raw fish. Apparently, it is quite common. The eggs are in the raw fish, they hatch and travel into the brain. There they form a cyst. You never know. What do they do when no one is looking? Are they really happy with what they are doing? Did they really think the joke was funny? I fix their jewelery. They know better with me. They also tell me their secrets.

Okay ... time to really scare the hell out of everyone .... Restaurant horror stories are common, but don't think that staying at home and cooking your own meals is going to be much better. Most people are not aware of governmental filth limitations for food sold in grocery stores. EVERYTHING you eat has some sort of native problem, and the government sets limitations, but that's a pretty low bar, and it's only used as a "guideline". You DON'T want to know what's in: * Candy! * Sausage * Canned soup * Bread and crackers * Apple sauce! * Pretzels * "Fresh" produce * Tuna fish * Fruit juices ... and the list goes on and on. You thing that $10 a pound steak looks so good? Hehehe NOT. That "fresh" fish you bought from the butcher? Not likely ... and the stuff that makes it to super markets is what's left after the best fish from the catch have been separated and actually sold fresh. Shrimp??? OMG, you REALLY don't want to know! Although seeing a waitress mining for Nose Gold is disgusting to see, it's really one of the least of your worries. You DO eat much worse, probably every day. Bon Appetit ************ Just a little add-on ... DON'T lick the glue on envelopes! Use a wet finger or a sponge ... don't ask ... you don't want to know.
