Hey Baz!
Where do you get your mineral specimens from? I've been starting a collection myself in the last year. Don't have any type of theme going...I just collect whatever strikes my fancy.
Almost all of my aquisitions are from the Arkenstone. Rob Lavinsky is quite an interesting fellow & his auctions can go from the itty bitty & reasonable to the mega size & mega $$. I've bid on everything from specimens, faceted stones, handmade jewelry, fossils & mineral artwork. If you haven't been there...go look. It's like a candy store!

I actually found this as part of a kid's mineral project that he/she must have done years ago. It was at Goodwill and they were selling this "box of crumby rocks" for a buck. Well it had turqouise, desert rose, peacock ore, etc. in there. Probably 20 specimens in all. What is it? "One man's trash is another man's treasure!"
My wife just picked up a nice chunk of Amythest at another thrift store for a buck and I have an agate slab that I got for free at another thrift shop (they were using it as a paper weight, I convinced them to use a chunk of granite instead) man I tell ya, some people just don't know what they have, check your local thrift shops and yard sales guys!

As for other specimens, just check Rock and Gem for your local rock show. There will usually be one within driving distance of your town, I just go and pick up whatever I am into at the time. Those guys love to wheel and deal too.

DUH! Why didn't I think of the thrift stores! Found many cool things over the years & yeah, if your collecting obscure things...most of the time the sorters haven't got a clue! Awesome reminder Baz & Mrs. Baz.
