I had to go get winter tires yesterday...took me 4 hrs of waiting but the good news was the rock shop is only a block away, soooooo, I went there & dug through the buckets & shelves and came home with a bunch of new rocks. This 6# hunk is called Spotted Rock or Spot Rock. (depends on who was talking. Mrs. Handley & her son got into a very spirited debate as to what to call it!) They both agreed, though, that it was from southern Oregon close to Calif. border. I was hoping Dale or someone familiar with it might be able to shed more light. It has a real pretty green & nice plum type color to it. Also...see the pennies? Those were from a friend of a friend type thing. Hundreds of pennies were punched out & the crosses from them were made into a large cross. (welded or soldered or glued...not sure cause I only saw a pic of it) The man who made it presented it to Richard Petty as a gift & then the punched pennies were handed out to the artists friends. I've given most of them away to racing buff friends & they seem to really like them. (I just thought it was sort of a cool story!) Thanks fer lookin kids!

Howdy, I think the trade name for that material is Lily Pad Jasper and the location: near Madras, Oregon. Think it's more of an orbicular rhyolite similar to Naches, Washington Thunderegg Matrix and Aussie Rainforest Jasper....mel

Yes, Mel is 100 percent right. Thats a fine chunk of Lilly Pad from near Madras. The deposit was closed for years and the last couple years they have been digging it. I believe a rock club from Hood River OR is leasing it. I know they were at the Prineville Pow-wow and had a good selection of rough. Thats a nice chunk, as Mel said it is more of a Rhyolite...Thanks for sharing the pic!!! -Dale Rhode
