Ok guys, I'm still learnin and I have a dumb question. You may laugh if you want, just answer the question so I can laugh also. Dino Bone and Dino Poo. What are they? It's not actually Dino Bones or poo, is it? Is it just called that because of the designs within the rock? OMG!! Where is Shain when I need him???!!! Thanks, Tonja

no - it *is* fossilized bone and dung. The best lapidary types are agatized and show color. Not all fossils are agate. Some poop just looks like rusty iron blobs.

Hey Tonja~ Yep... Dino poo is fossized animal dung and is called Coprolite. And of course dino bone is just fossilized bone... I find lots of giant sloth fossil bones here in TX so it's not just dino bone that can be fossilized...

Yup, It be real bone and poop all right. We get whalebone here a lot but dino bone is rare in Calif. Like Daniel said the best types, usually from Utah, Colorado, Wyoming etc are well agatized. Only thing that bugs me about it is sometimes the cellular walls of the areas within the bone do not seem to be as agatized as the rest of the bone which can lead to undercutting between the cells. Still make cabs with a very interesting pattern though......mel

Dino coprolite can be a lot of fun just because of what it is. I have sold a lot of cabs and freeforms made from dino coprolite, and most of the feedback (no pun intended) is from people who think buying jewelry of this type is hilarious. A lot of it goes to the buyer's friends, and I am not so sure they tell them what it is until they have worn it awhile. However, I had a customer purchase a coprolite pendant and before I could ship it out the next day, I got another email from the customer who decided to change her order. Apparently she did not know what a "coprolite" was and then decided to look it up in the dictionary. That's all it took...she just couldn't bring herself to wear "something like that!" I laughed about that for days.

Oh how funny!! It is kinda creepy but is sure is fun to shape and wrap. It can be kinda tricky because the lighter colors are softer. Guess I'm glad that is cleared up. Might make me think twice as I'm doing the next one. LOL Tonja

Hey, Free4rms, is it true what I have heard about bad odors emminating from the tumbler when coprolite is tumbled? Or does that happen only on the cabbing machine?

Hah hah! I thought my brother was kidding, when he said some of our rocks were dino turds. Could someone post some pics of the outside and (cut?) inside of a few examples, so I can compare? Dung jewelry really happens. I've seen varnished deer, moose, rabbit, jackalope (no kidding) and elk dung jewelry, as well as lots of rattlesnake items. People have also made decorative (!!??) canes and lamp bases out of certain parts of bulls (after which they are no longer bulls.) I'm sticking with rocks! Even if they are dino turds!
