Does anyone recognize this material? It is in a friends collection and I find it most intriguing stuff.... it looks like some kind of very fine grained argillite with a most unusual fish-scale pattern. It seems to be a natural, water-worn rock, not artificially shaped or polished. I have no idea where this stuff is from unfortunately. How the devil does any rock form such a fine and uniform pattern? Cheers, Tim

Way to go Shain, your like a walking identification guide book. That one had me stumped. For as young as you are, you amaze me with the knowledge you have about rocks.

There is a piece of rough listed with Western Oregon lapidary Source on E-Bay that looks identical to this piece but it is called / refered to as Polychrome Jasper from Madagascar. The piece Dave has up has some colors running through it.
