Recently I got a PM asking for some photos of our local flint. I took these photos with some shots of what we locally know as flint followed by pictures of Flint Ridge Flint (rough and polished). First some Missouri flint photographed dry -- some came from bro in law Howard's hill. Lots of rocks on the hill. This is Flint Ridge flint photographed wet: And polished: I don't know why one doesn't seem to load the picture.

That is some pretty! I have never had any idea of what flint was except that stuff that helps you start a fire. I wonder how you can tell if just out picking through a river bed. I can never tell.. Tammy

Flint, chert, agate, and jasper are all closely related. Definitions vary some and are based on texture and color, usually, though there are many exceptions to the rules. Locally the stuff in the pictures would be called flint, it comes in a variety of colors, and you often find it in fractured pieces or chunks. It fractures chonchoidally (like a shell shaped depression) which is characteristic of the quartzy rocks. Often very obvious in the local rock. It's also hard and makes a ringing sound when it knocks together.

I've never heard of flint before but it looks great whatever it is. Great rocks!! They look slightly like jasper (does anyone else think that or is that just my strange mind?)

When its wet it looks like the Jasper we have in Wisc. But then again a buddy one time told me it was Chert so i called it Chert for 2 years. All i no for sure is it looks cool.

I've looked at many many photos & the categorization makes no sense. Take Flint Ridge Flint, all bright and colorful and patterned, unlike most flint according to the definitions. Then there are all the patterned jaspers and even some patterned cherts. It is confusing.

It does seem confusing. I think I might join the local lapidary club and go on some rock hunts with them. T.

Wow! The only flint I ever really knew about was the stuff we used in chem lab to spark a fire for our Bunsen burners. I always thought it was black--like arrowheads. This stuff is beautiful. I feel like I am back in school just about every time I visit this forum. There is so much to learn and so many neat people willing to share what they know.
Now that I've seen flint "in Color" I'm going to have to look for some on eBay. Dang! I wish Florida had some mountains to explore--but then Florida does have such beautiful shells and fossils. I guess Mother Earth knows how to spread her wealth all around us.
