I'm looking for the name of the following 2 tyes of rock. They came in an ebay auction I won, along with a bunch of other nice slabs all for $10 incl. shipping! I'm guessing that this one is some type of plume agate (its big, 6"x8") and this is obviously obsidian but I don't know what kind Thanks. Tony M

Tony: I'd guess Bloody Basin Moss Agate from Arizona for the first one ( could be moss from a dozen areas though. Much moss looks alike.) and one of the Midnight Lace variants for the obsidian.

Kinda late, but I'm new here going through the history.
First one looks like maybe Maury Mountain Moss to me. But like was said before, many moss' look alike.

Hey Tony, Looks like you're doing real good on eBay! Those are both beautiful. How are you certain the second is obsidian? Is it because of texture, clean fractures, color? I think I have several nice pieces from my trip last summer but they're completely black. Susan

Susan, I know its not agate because it is way too soft for agate. I have several different types of obsidian none all black though.

The first does look like Maury Mtn. Moss. The second is definitely obsidian. Typical of Davis Creek, or Glass Buttes, though it isn't Rainbow or Midnight Lace. If you go into the mountains just south of the Lava Beds National Monument in far Northern California there is a mini mountain of this about 200 feet high running for a few miles, though quite a bit of it is rather dull looking.
