Hi all, While vacationing in Cave Junction, Oregon a few weeks ago (which is right on the Oregon/California border) I picked up a bunch of rock on the Illinois River. Much of the material in the river had shiny mica mixed in but along with those I found some larger "chunks" that were different. My first thought was marble because the Oregon caves are just 20 miles away and they are made of marble. But these are harder than what I thought marble normally was. Then I thought it must be jasper but jasper isnt normally colored like this. I scratched them with a knife blade............no mark. I scratched them with quartz and it made little to no mark. If there was a mark, it was just barely. So, what are these? Thanks! Shannon

Shannon: With that hardness and that glassy look to them I'd say they're some kind of jasper. Oregon has many different types and colors all over the state....Mel

Thanks for your input Mel. Because of the hardness, I was thinking jasper as well. Having lived in Oregon all my life I can honestly say that I havent seen jasper like these before. Oregon is well known for it but Ive never had any before that had blues/pinks etc. with a marbled veined look to them like these. But I havent done a lot of self collecting either because where I live everything is basalt!
