I saw this stone at the show this weekend. I have seen it called snake skin, dragon scale and fire agate. What the heck is it.

Hi Jeremy, Its not fire agate. I have never really seen a dragon up close and personal but I was thinking most of them were greenish? Just Kidding, sorta.

*L* That one has me totally stumped too. I've also heard it called "Crab Fire Agate" in addition to those other names. I've heard Mexico and Indonesia as origins and it looks to me to be almost fossil coral like. All seems to be of a light to dark carnelian with those odd cell like structures. Neat stuff but I'm clueless as to what it actually is....Mel

I think it IS a fossil coral. A bead company was the first to call it "Fire Agate." Then there was a small revolt of people who knew it wasn't fire agate who started calling it Crab Fire Agate. From there, the name keeps shifting. If what I read about it is correct, it's actually a softer stone...and there was some debate as to whether it was dyed or not.

Hmmm - so the idea over at mindat is that it's extremely heat treated to get the color. My information was from about a year ago as well.

I have seen it called a crab somethin or another, the pattern kinda looks like a crab type pattern in the body shell part
