Dear Rock Master, I've tried looking this stone up.. I dunno maybe it's under something else.. I sure could use someone with the smarts here.. those Apache tears... what are they? Not glass, not obsidian? Not Onyx ? Quartz?? or do they have a special name that I don't know about.... I've been trying to read up on them just cuz i like them and I found this one that's HUGE well I think it's one.. so I was looking for some sort of place to give me sorta like a reference guide to let me know if Im just trippin or what.. But.. I can't even find them in a book I have that I thought described them as (moldivites)(sp)? but some on here said that's not them so.. Little help ? PUHLEEEEZ!!! ;D Here's a crappy pic of it..hope you can see it better than I took it. ;D (added the pic) Roxy

Hey Snowdog Dave!! ;D Whats up? So is this information you have on the inside or what?? lol.. But who knows.. I'll probably have to ask them myself huh.. lol ;D Anyways I just now realized that Tony said they were Obsidian. I didn't know that so looking them maybe I should try that name instead huh, Merikanite Obsidian.. that might help.. So Thank you again! ;D Roxy

Yup, what the others said, a very pure form of obsidian that forms in perlite deposits. The type from Superior, Arizona seem to be mostly very translucent gold or silver volcanic glass but other types from California, Utah, and Nevada seem to have more that are opaque and even a few translucent ones with stars in them. Davis Creek, Calif. even has a form called "dried prunes" that are all wrinkley on the outside and inside have obsidian of all colors and various degrees of translucency....Mel

On some of the material from Davis Creek you can see layers with a "fibrous" appearance. If you cut the cab rather thick (1/2"), high dome, long oval and with the "fibers" going across the cab it will have an eye in the particular color of that piece. I will post some pictures in the cabochons heading. Bob
