Wrap 2!

Okay. So, I went searching through the little rocks and such I have around here and the only flat willing volunteer was Kambara Jasper so... here goes. Second attempt with the same 24 ga silver wire. I used 3 pieces of wire and found it harder to do a flat rock then a quartz point personally! This really does make me appreciate even more the skill that goes into creating these pieces of art because it really is an art! Now.. any advice and thoughts are welcome. I take constructive criticism well! lol Tammy

Hi, Tammy!
The progress from your first wrap is obvious! The curls and the double swirl at the top are really nice, this is in my opinion your forte piont. Regarding the wires over the stone, I think they must not overlap each-other at the bottom of the stone. Put them paralel and try to tight the linking spiral as much as you can, closing them after each new circle. I use for this spiral a diferent piece of wire. It seems to me you used one of the main wires to do the spiral. I really don't know what is the best solution or if it is one, but try both (I'll try yours, too). Also try some curves on the wires on the stone's height.
What tools do you use? I ask you because I don't see any scrathes or amprents on the wires (which is not my case).
Congratulations, keep working!
Adrian

Cool job Great work! You might want to try to use 1/2 round wire for the bindings at the bottom, they tend to sit a little better (flatter) on the wire. Try to keep them tightly together
If you're looking for wire in Canada PM me I can help you find a few places - believe me I've looked all over
Which neck of the Canadian woods are you from? I'm just outside the Nation's Capital

Your improving!!! Just keep at it. Tweets advice on the half round is really good advice. I have found it useful to have more than one binding point. I noticed you made sure to have clean ending points thats really important. Congrats keep it up.

You've got the idea. I must say though, 24g SS wire is thin. I have some and it's a bear to use for wraps. Try getting 20 or 21 guage SS wire. I think you'll find it easier. Also, Tweet is right about half round, half hard wire for your bindings. It will be a stronger bind and it will lay flatter for you. IMHO, I would try 20 guage SS wire with 22 guage HH, HR for bindings. You are doing a great job. You can see much improvement from your first wrap. Just keep trying and trying. Practice makes it easier. You're doing great girlfriend!! Keep at it!! Tonja

Hey there. Thanks for the great advice! So when you do the binding like I did at the bottom (it's called binding right?) and you use 22 guage half round half hard, you use a seperate piece then? I was thinking that and that I should try it. It doesn't seem easy to get the binding nice and tight I tell you! lol But, this is so much fun and I woke up at about 5am today.. grabbed a cup of joe and it was some nice quiet time. I find that this really soft wire is a little tough to hold into place, it's good to know that harder wire is easier to work with. I still don't really have any tools except the big pair of rusty needle nose plyers, that I think my husband lubed up for me because they are nice and smooth now. lol Does someone feel like posting a picture of the tools they use? lol Thing is I really don't like how messy the neck and stuff look so I will keep practicing! Thanks! Tammy

Also, flat nose pliers are what I use for the binding, and really helps tighten it down! Nice swirls!! It's almost like ribbons on a gift!

Oooo I hate when that happens. I had this all done then accidently closed the tab. Ok, I got all of my pliers (except the nylon jaw) from www.widgetsupply.com for under $5 bucks each (USD). My flat needle nose pliers are the same ones that Preston Reuther had on his site for big bucks. Anyway, here's links so you can see them. You also want a good side cutter pliers that cut smooth. Flat nose smooth jawRound Nose Precision Pliers, Smooth JawsRound Nose Rosary PliersChain Nose PliersDefinitely improvement. You do, as mentioned want to put more than one set of binding wires. I wonder if you play with that a little, it might be able to pop out the side since it's only really held together at the top and bottom. Hope the links work for you, if not, just go to the site and click on hobby supplies then pliers, and follow the names I wrote.

You are getting better. I agree with the others the 24ga is a little thin. Good luck with the next one. Oh bye the bye welcome to the addiction of wire wrapping. Tami

You could also get some good flush cutters - it cuts the wire nice & straight with no pinch marks - that color wire goes nice with the stone too!

Great job for a second attempt. I can tell you that Jonje's first attempts weren't that nice... hahaha. Keep at it, you will get it and you will find what you like and what works best for you. Joi
