Howdy Folks, my wife has become increasingly interested in wire wrapping and would like to try experimenting a bit with some of my tumbled rocks. So, where does she start? Neither of us have any idea about wrapping. Are there any online tutroials that are worth checking out? Has anyone here ever done a step-by-step post showing how start a wrap, how to finish a wrap and do all of the cool bits in between? What are the basic pieces of equipment she would need? What does she need to know about types, shapes, strengths etc. of wire? How do you make them look as fantastic as all of you clever wrapping people do? Yeah, I know, I don't ask much do I! But you guys and gals (fellas and shielas) are the experts. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to help us out. You rock! Mike

This is a link that I first followed after admiring the wraps posted here: jewelrymaking.about.com/library/weekly/aa112398.htmThe wraps aren't as polished as Kim's, but the instructions were pretty solid. The final steps/tweaks (placement of holding wires, end of wire designs, and bail) are where the different wrapper's style really comes into play. But those instructions were pretty basic and solid. There are some other tutorials out there on the web as well. Best class I ever had was trying to mentally take apart the wraps that were posted here. Ronda

Banjocreek had a post about wrapping a stone - I can't find it - Doc had input in there but I can't locate it - I learned from that - and from looking at the wraps of others...

I learned fro Kim (rockyraccoon). She sent me a wrap and I basicly copied that. If I can see something, I can usually copy it but mine are no where close to kim's

Thanks folks. I'll have to get my hands on one and give it to my wife, Vicki. I'll get her to check out the online stuff too.

I looked at pictures where ever I could find them and followed the wires over and over. Some of the things you need ... smooth jawed pliers, nylon jawed pliers are a must. I got most of mine from www.widgetsupply.com There was a post in here not too long ago that someone else had asked the same info. There was a lot of good info so you might want to look back through the pages here.

Mike, I first found wire wrapping in November of 2006. I asked a bunch of questions, everyone was wonderful. If you start glancing thru the older threads here, there is a lot of great help from all the experts. I finally started on the last page and worked my way up, which I should have done in the first place.... Oh well! I found that quite a few people have had the same questions I had. I bought some books that someone suggested, and bought some masking tape, pliers and cheap craft wire. I'm still practicing! Beware, however; you might be getting into more than you bargain for. I want to buy a saw now! Good luck to you and your wife!

tumbled rock and wire go together like a sled and a snow covered hill and it is downhill slope for both.

You can also find loads of info at your local library. At least I've heard that! There is also a magazine called Step by Step Wire Jewelry...I learned from another magazine that is no longer in publication...but you can buy some old issues and it was called Wire Artist Jeweler (you'll have to google it, sorry!). Happy Trails!
