Noosh, agate is usually the same as quartz. It is an ortho-morphic chrystalline. Should look real cool when polished. I used to live near the Chelis area in WA. Rains a lot.

Man Noosh, that stuff looks like it is hard as a rock! Why would you buy that crap?...hehe, just kiddin buddy ;D. Great looking batch of agates, it will be beautiful polished up I bet. You'll have to post a pic of the finished product for us, can't wait to see it when it is done. If you or anyone else has a pic they'd like to post but don't have a dedicated web space to link to, drop me an e-mail and I'll put it up here for you, no problem. Later all and happy tumblin', Don

Greetings All,
Hey Noosh, if the agates you have are as nice looking as another batch the same seller has a picture off, they look nice indeed. Agate is between 6.5and 7.0 hardness, but the pieces in the picture I'm looking at look like they've been well sorted so that there isn't a lot of matrix or gange, so I'd probably start them off in 120/220 for a week or even two. I'd think too coarse a grit would just be overkill, since the whole piece of the rocks is ready to be shaped. If there is a lot of matrix on the pieces, which has happened with some flame agate I've polished, then I've used 46/70 and 60/90 grit, even with multiple runs, to get individual pieces clean enough to please me.

Hi Noosh
We all have different ways of tumbling our material. I can ony share my experiece with polishing Agates. I would start with 90 grit anything less will take a long tome to remove the sharp edges and get your desired shape. Check your tumble often, take out a few rocks, if your happy with the shape go to the next step(220grit) else keep on with the 90. You have some nice Agate it will look great when it's finished.
