Ok I'm gonna try Dopping- but I got a question as to technical technique? Which side do you start on??? Do you work the good (front) side first- then re-dop the finished side and do the back side- or does it not really matter? Also what wax do you all use? Santa Fe Jewlery offers 2- green and brown- Kingsley offers like 3 or 4 (Green, brown, black, red?) And I'm guessing the wax can be reused??? So how much do I really need (I'm guessing a pound should keep me happy for a long time!) HELP!!!!

i dont remember it all but i think each color melts at a dif temp so the one that melts at the highest is the strongest -----i think and you will lose alittle each time but a lb should last a long wile

A pound will last you a lifetime. I bought mine at a show and don't remember what it weighed, but I go like 3 sticks and it can't weigh more than a few ounces. Oh, and I haven't even touched 2 of the sticks. I've got the green stuff and it workes really well. Grab a few of your old golf tees for dop sticks.

How do you guys melt this stuff? at the club they have a hot plate with a dip tin for melting - I was thinking much smaller for home, like a coffee warmer but the tin.... what's smaller than a dip tin?

i bought the green stuff. works for me. yep, you can reuse it...i have an electric dop unit, but have to put it on a fire pad as i almost cooked my kitchen countertop with it....OOPS!
i work the front first and then finish the back, but i think that is just personal prefence.
good luck, Stefan! and put a little bowl of cold water by your work area to cool your fingertips, it can get pretty warm one way or another!

LMAO THanks for that tip KD- Tweet I have an electric Griddle Hot plate thing slow cooker thing that we got as a wedding gift that we never used- The wife was cleaning out our pantry and says- hey can you use this? I jumped at it- I have a small pot that I plan on using but honestly something like a tunafish can would work real well (I think) I may get one of those decrotaive cast iron fry pans (you know the real little ones that you hang on a wall?) cause the iron would hold the heat for a long time- Oh and stoner- I got about 100 golf tees that say- Worlds Greatest Dad! I stopped golfing a few years back (too freaking expensive!!!) but still have all my equip- including dops....er golf tees!

I use epoxy. Some of the stones I do are heat sensitive. I epoxy the front side first. I outline, than flatten, then polish the back. I snip off the dop, unless I use my aluminum dops, those I heat to loosen the epoxy, then grind the top, grinding off the pieces of dop, and epoxy. To loosen the backset dop, I use my side cutters to clip/pry off the dop and pick the remainder of epoxy off with a fingernail. Bada Bing, Bada Boom. Big Boom.

fingernails of steel!
i think with fairly tiny stones, epoxy is the way to work it, but i haven't tried it yet, i made hubby make smallers dops, lol!
BearCreek left me with one of the "Secrets of the Bear Revealed", but i am in process, so cannot post till i'm finished........
i got a bunch of green wax, Stefan, if you want to experiment, i'll send that and the #$%** cerium i hate.
btw, Bear is working on a video, can't wait to buy it!!! i think Doc should seriously think of doing one too!!

Ok I just bought a pound of the green stuff so I guess I'm in this too! I have a coffee warmer and a tin can lined with teflon maybe? What temp does the teflon melt at? Maybe I don't want to do this 'till it's warm enough to open the windows.

Just remember not to heat it up too much as that makes the dop wax very brittle and not at all the right consistency to dop - it gets all gummy too

Well Got the green (dang A pound of wax is an aweful lot) I pot a half a stick in the pot- turned it on- and forgot about it (actually I heard the diner bell!!!) came down a half hour later and I had a pool of green goo in the bottom of the pot- I dipped a wodden dowel (can't seem to find thase dang golf tees) and twirled it around- got the goo on it and smashed it onto the heated rock (yea I left the rocks on the griddle too- pulled the whole thing off the griddle and set it aside too cool- Damn if it did not work out awesome!!!!!! Boy sure was funn running the rocks on the 220 belt!!!!! I like this dop thing- It was a lot easier than I invisioned- So KD keep your wax- but I'll take the cerium off your hands- Oh I also have some solid stock alum rod- I'll send you out a couple sections- I can't remeber the dimensions- but it is stuff they use to "emergency" weld Aluminium (no gass needed) should work pretty good-

Did you get that 3000 grit belt yet Stefan? I have one coming Monday, if the snow ever quits! The UPS guy is going to have a long walk, don't think he will bring his truck down my driveway. 300' downhill. Easy getting in, a little harder to get out in the winter. Bill

Hi Tweety pie & All. As regards melting the doping wax A friend gave me a little heater that uses a 60 watt light bulb, takes a while to heat up, but dosent get too hot so its a fair quick job to dop a stick
