What size cab would you recommend for starting out?
How thick should I be cutting the slabs?

you can use any size cab i started doing free forms and never stopped haha so i just cut a piece and see what it wants to be -------i cut my slabs at 5 turns of the cross feed thats around 1/4 thick i find they work out better that way you can allways thin them down if need be

Yep, 1/4" is a good size for the slabs. It makes for a nice dome, and if you want a lower dome, just grind off a little more. Lately I've been doing alot of calibrated cabs and I like making them either 40x30mm or 30x22mm the best. Good luck and show us some pics of your work.
