Hi all. Sorry, I guess I should just wait til I'm done cabbing for the day and then post the pics. Oh well, here are 2 cabs from the rocks Susan sent me. Some type of VERY hard agate from New Mexico 40x30mm I took 2 different exposures on the Lepidolite to try and catch the sparkle in the stone. This stuff has to be about a 2 or 3 on the mohs scale, but it took a nice shine. 30x22mm Be patient Susan, I'm working on more of your rocks.

That red agate is outstanding. How weird that it was fractured like that.
Guess I'll have to go collect more Lepidolite, eh?

Susan did you collect that purple stuff locally to you? That's so pretty, what a neat find. That red stuff though, totally amazing. Great cabs Ed, beautiful job again.

Thanks everyone, even though that red agate is fractured, there are still some nice cabs to be made out of it. And you're right Kim, it's difficult to really show off the Lepidolite in a photo. In the sunlight it just sparkles big time.

Cher - I collected the lepidolite at the Harding Pegmatite Mine which is owned by the University of New Mexico. I posted a thread about it a while back - next time I go I'll try to get some photos. Collecting is allowed (with a signed release form) on a fee basis, and you can only take out 5 lbs of rock. Stoner is correct - it is quite soft and I doubt it would do well in a tumbler, but he kindly offered to cab some for me. The area is beautiful and it's worth it to get the lepidolite. There are supposed to be some other places in new Mexico where one can collect lepidolite, but I haven't checked them out yet. The red agate (?) jasper (?) is typical of what can be found near the Rio Puerco - sometimes with yellow stringers and translucent areas. I have a couple barrels rolling right now full of NM agate and P-wood collected on Ron's Mesa. Should be done in about 3 months... S
