Ok, I just finished my first batch using dop sticks - wooden dowels.
How do remove the wax from the sticks?
Thanks, Cal

Well, I get the stones off the stick by putting them in the freezer. I leave the wax on the stick until the next dop session. Then I put the sticks in the pot and melt the wax off.

I do as above to get the stones off the stick but then to get the wax off the sticks I hold them on end (wax side down) and push/swirl the stick on a piece of paper towel to break the wax off the stick and then put the wax back in the pot

yup, i do a combination of the above. i also have a little saucepan for those really cantankerous bits that insist on clinging to the stone, i reheat them in hot water and then play hot potato with a knife and paper towel to get the rest of the wax off, because i've cracked stones trying to get the wax off cold with a knife.

I just put them in the freezer for 15 min. to take the stone off and don't worry about the stick till next time i want to use it then I just put the wax end back in the pot ant let it melt Dick B.

Thanks all for the tip. I had the same idea about putting the dops back into the dop pot to melt the wax, but thought I would ask before actually doing it!

I have been having a problem getting the dop sticks (dowel rod) to stick. When I was working inside (air conditioned) I had no problem. I am now outside in a uninsulated (and holey) building. Could damp/warm/etc conditions have anything to do with it? Also I am now using a 1/4 lb stick I was given, of unknown age. Can wax go bad? Wax usually sticks to both the dowel and the stone, but they break apart leaving pieces on both. Any suggestions?
