You have to eliminate the light source to eliminate the shine. Taking the pics in the shade can sometimes help.

Real nice photos of some real nice stones!
Opps... forgot to mention: About the macro stuff. The best possible photo would have to be measured using a tape measure and manual focus, (do not rely on your cameras auto focus). Your lens should have some kind of documentation showing these measurements. Also a small aperture will give you the greatest depth of field for a sharper focus. Yes.... I use to dabble in photography. ;D

Cher: Those pics were taken in the shade on my screened in patio which is kind of a light cage, only big. Still got lots of reflection.
Wow, Daniel that is a cool rig but how do you get over the top of the cab with your camera mounted on a tripod? Guess you have to figure a way to stand the cab up so you can shoot in the door?....mel

Mel. I use little plastic cab stands. I have a few dozen. Let me send you one. PM me an address.
The stand and the tent is easy. The real challenge is god brigh lights to put outside the tent. You want a color temperature of 5000K or 6500K.

One other question - is this the finished size of the photo or are you reducing the size any?
Or have you already trimmed the edges off the picture?

Daniel: Thanks but I looked through my drawers and found me a whole box of cab stands. Hadn't even considered using them for pics but they look like they'll work pretty well. May even try some transmitted light pics to show off some plume agate cabs.
Arkansan: *L* You give me way more credit for understanding the whole computer pic thing than I deserve. This is just the way the camera takes the photo. Don't understand anything about reduction of size or cropping etc. However, you got me to check the instructions and it turns out I'm using a very basic setting and apparently can get much more definition if I want "Duh" *L*...mel

Well, I'm glad I could help! If you had just been making the entire image smaller, then you could easily just trim out the edges and not reduce the image. But if that's the way they come, I still like your camera better than mine!
