OK, I am adding a 600 grit diamond Nova (soft) wheel to my machine. I am currantly running 8" wheels/drums. I have an empty bay that I am going to put the 600 Nova wheel into. What are all your thoughts about putting a 6" wheel in there instead of an 8" wheel and save about $50? I will lose 1/2 inch wheel width but that doesn't seem too bad for the savings. My water drip should work just fine and even with the wheel sitting back 1 inch into the bay further than an 8" wheel will leave me plenty of room to work my stones. Thanks much, Bill Well?

DON'T DO IT!!!! Hey Bill, earlier this year I picked up a used 6" 1200g Nova wheel and mounted it on the right end of my 8" machine, and it sits right next to the 8" 220 wheel. Well, even with it being on the end, I still have a difficult time getting to the left edge of the 6" wheel, and I'm constantly scraping my knuckles on my left hand on the 220 wheel. So if you were to put it in between two 8" wheels, it would be even more difficult to access it. Mind you now, I don't dop my stones. But even if you did dop the stone, you wouldn't be able to work the edges of the cab.

OK, I see what you mean Ed. But the bay that I am going to put the new wheel in won't have any other wheels in it. I have an old old Highland Park grinder. I has a center bay that I have two hard diamond wheels in, 80/220. There are two other bays, one on each side of the center bay with one of these having a polishing disc on it's end. One I have a expandable drum and the other is now empty. I guess you could say that it is almost like four grinding machines on one shaft. A double with a single on each side.
Does that make it clear as mud!! Thanks, Bill

OK, I found an old pic of it, in this pic it only has one diamond hard wheel. The bay I am going to use is the one that is covered on the right side of the machine. And yes, I have cleaned it up a little since this photo was taken!! Hee hee!

Well, from the picture, it looks doable except that the wheel is going to be 1" inside the cover. I'll tell you what. I was going to remove the 6" Nova wheel anyway, how about I send it to you and you can see if it's going to work before you spend a lot of money on a new wheel. Send me a PM if you want it.

Ed has a valid point as the wheel will be in the cover (actually 2 inches) As the center of the wheel is not gonna change- Your gonna lose 2 inches off an 8 incher- Just my thoughts- but if the 6 inch wheel doesn't work why not go with another expandable drum and a diamond belt?

I might try that Stefan. I was messing around with it yesterday and the bays are pretty deep. I am not above "opening" them up a bit if I have to. They are at least 6 inches deep, don't know why they made them that deep. The covers can be opened up if needed too. I don't figure I will ever sell the machine so I might just as well make it what I want. I'll just see when I get a 6 inch wheel mounted up. Thanks for all the input, Bill

I mounted 6 inch wheels on an 8 inch Lortone and I found the extra room nice. It's pretty different from a highland park but I bet the outcome will be similar: A little more room to work with and more water spray. The hoods are designed for bigger wheels and the gap you create will gush water. It's only a minor issue though. Steve

it will be running at a slower surface speed compared to the 8" i don;t know if that will matter or not.
