jonje: We have a pyrite in chalcedony material here in Calif. ( Nipomo Marcasite) Cool stuff but it often rusts. There's pyrite in the Sierra poppy jasper too but it's gold bearing so seems to go longer without rusting. I suspect a solid pyrite cab would be a rust problem too unless coated or stabilized somehow to prevent oxidation. Interesting idea. Anyone else here have experience cutting solid pyrite cabs?.....mel

jonje seems like we talked about this material before - maybe pyrite in manganese or manganite? i have a solid pyrite sphere and it isn't rusting but it really hurts if it hits you in the nose when dusting. alot of the african materials i have also have pyrite in them.

Hey jeremy, I have some of that material. I picked it up from my local rock shop last year sometime. Is the picture you have in your post from the Rio Grande catalog? Here's a small chunk I cut and did a quick shape and polish on. The pic doesn't show the colors very well.

jonje: Here in western GA, limonite after pyrite is common. One member cabbed a piece and found out that not all of the sulphur had leached out. It made a beautiful cab. Hope this helps !!

Hi Jeremy, I have 3 or 4 materials that have a large amount of pyrite in them. I will take some pictures for you and post them later today. This is a cab I cut from one of the materials.

Whoa! That's different! Pretty cool stuff...
From what I've read, Pyrite inclusions/replacements are fairly common. I have some Brazilian G. Aventurine (from the Rockshed) with some tiny little Pyrite inclusions. I love it... best Aventurine I've seen.. deep rich green color with those little Pyrite flecks...pretty cool. I think Shawn still has some....

I find my rough pieces too and cut one for you too. You may wind up with more pryite cabs than you know what to do with.

Talking about pyrite reminded me i have a pair of cufflinks made from Septarian Pyrite ( comes from Yorkshire UK ) So here is another example. I have had them for about a year and rust is starting to form. Me thinks i should give them a clean Jeff P

Well, i would give them a quick wipe every now and then as the rust is more of a surface stain. Jeff P
