Okay, it looks like I'm (FINALLY!) going to put the pieces I've collected over the last ten months together into a lapidary station. I'd like to run the particulars by you guys for advice, if you don't mind...
Of the many two station arbors I accumulated during this time (at one point I had six in my garage...don't ask me why - I still haven't figured it out), I am down to the final two that will remain here. One of the arbors has both ends tapped, so I'm thinking a five station set up. Two diamond wheels, two expandable drums, and a flat lap/pad on one end.
Sound okay so far?
I have two similar air conditioner motors that were originally purchased to run a cement mixer but never used - 1/3 hp 1750 rpm. One of them already is set up to run a pulley, the other will have to have an adapter added.
I also have four "shields" with water drip, but only one has the side remaining. These shields are more grinding style with no pan. Am I correct in thinking this will just leave big puddles of water below the wheels? How important are the pans? I know the arbor with the expandable drums will need a different type of shield/pan set up, as the drums won't fit within these shields. Would I be better off to just get new shields all around?
And finally, any advice on which two diamond wheels to purchase?
Have I forgotten anything? Are there any pitfalls I'm headed for or does this look about right for a setup?
Right now, figuring in two new shield/pans and the wheels plus the equipment I already have purchased, it looks like the final price is going to be about $450. It's not a Genie, but that's okay by me for the price!
