Nice job Ed, IM a stickler for Fire agates, and that last one is a real treat. BUt it would be some much nicer and gem grade if you expose the better fire at the bottom there. IM not saying you have to by any means. BUt ones like that are best cut to expose the best fire, even if you lose the easy fire ontop. Its the game you play with good fire agates.

Thanks everyone. It feels good to have time to sit and cut a bunch of cabs again. I did a few more this evening again so maybe mor pics tomorrow. I hope you don't get tired of seeing the fire agates cuz I have a lot to play with and they are all really cool looking. I'm not sure what you're talking about Shain, it looks to me that I have exposed the fire over the entire stone.

HI Ed, I think Shain is talking about the greenish layer that you can see lying beneath the brownish red layer. The cabs are beautiful, do you polish with Tin Oxide/leather and then Zam?

Those fire agates are outstanding Ed. THey remond me of cooking sugar to make candy for some reason. My favorite, though, is gotta be Jamie's Arizona agate. Wow. I'm glad you got some good cabbing in this weekend. They are all beautiful. Steve

jamies got it Ed. You did expose fire, just not the best layer. That is the trick with all fire agate cutting. IN cases of Deer Creek fire agate, more often you got over 4 layers to choose from. Sometimes the best layer is on top, but most times its on the bottom. BUt your concern is totally valid about knowing when to stop. Sometimes becasue of the shape of the stone, in realtionship to the fire layer. Inhibits proper cutting, and in that case. Stop.
Notice you have a larger bubble at one end? That bubble shows that you went to far with that top layer, which is 60% of the stone[the fire we mostly see]. But that bottom green layer should be under that top layer still. So further cutting using a flex shaft can bring out the whole good layer.
NOw again, im not saying thats what you have to do. I am only pointing out that you could. And "if" the layer is present as it looks to be at the one end, on the other end under that large bubble. A finished cab, carved more than cabochond. Could be considered "gem grade" and fetch a very high price even in a small size. Ive sold similar, under a dime size for over $150 for a single cut with that grade of fire. But only cut properly.
