My arbor rebuild plans flew out the window last week when I managed to win an older refurbished Frantom 8" four station unit for $150, complete with wheels (100, 220, two Scott-Murray expandable drums) and motor. It just arrived today, and as I'm looking at the box of misc. parts that the seller sent along with it I've developed a couple questions.
First Question. I have two 7" metal wheels with a slit through one edge and what appears to be a tightening screw inside the edge, original with the machine (stamped Frantom). These would be the equivalent of the the expandable drums right now, correct? One of them looks like it might have had a thin layer of cork or leather bonded to the metal originally. Do you happen to know if this was an important feature or are they useable as is? Of course, it could just be old backing from a wet piece of sanding paper that dried on it.
I'm asking because the way this one is currently rigged up, I would have to dismantle it to replace the belt on the inside expandable drum (currently has a 400 belt). The outer one's set up to just slip on and off, but not the inner one. If it was a diamond setup, it wouldn't be as much of a problem as the belt changing wouldn't be quite as frequent. Switching to one of these for a temporary holdover until I can replace that with one or two hard wheels would reduce the hassle level if they are still useable.
Next question. Also included is a very, very old leather polish pad. This pad is so old, I'm not sure if I'm seeing the leather on the end or the rubber backing the leather used to be attached to. In some places, I'm sure it's not the leather. Is there any way to restore this pad, re-upholster it ( ) or something? Or is it just one of those items that really shouldn't have been shipped with the unit?
Final question. You see the long item in the far left corner in the second picture? WHAT is that? I've looked all over this grinder for where this might attach, and I can't seem to figure it out. Any hints?
