Here are some cabs I've been working on lately - I've ordered a diamond wheel - I can't do flats on the SC machine the SC grinding wheel won,t stay flat... Here is a piece of peristerite (sp?) it has amazing flash - here is a full frontal shot Here is a shot of it's profile - that's the flash from the stone and not the camera Here is a piece of the leopardskin jasper that I won off ebay (my first transaction and it was a good experience - I bid on 4 items and won 2) this is the second time I work with this stuff (my very first cab was leopardskin) and it has shined up brightly (although I've heard that it takes a matte finish, mine have gotten a glossy shine - please don't ask me how, as I haven't a clue) Here is a piece of the African Queen I got off ebay with the leopardskin - I suck at squares, but this one shined up okay This is a piece of something that I don't know - it's kinda porous, I was bummed when I started this one, but it turned out much better than I anticipated - the colors are muted there are tints of red in there Finally, I tried a flat - but I get a slight curve and the flat top & bottom are still a bit unpolished.. but it is nevertheless fabulous! Here is a shot of it in the light - looks like a segmented orange - it's spectacular! sorry it's a bit blurry Thanks for looking - any advise is always welcome

Nice cabs, you'll have to ask sands how he does his flats - the best I've seen. I do so love the leopardskin jasper, wishing I still had some but I tumbled all mine

Yup, looking good for sure Tweety. That pietersite piece though sure looks like a type of Feldspare, similar to Moonstone, labradorite, spectrolite, or Larvavite. Still nice looking set, i would have to say the Picture jasper is my fav.
Ive done flat cab cutting, but you need a flat lap. At least to shape it and put the good top on it. however it can be done on a vertical wheel set up like in what we normally use. It just not true flat. But it is possible and take longer in my opinion than dome cabochon when you dont have a flat lap to at least do the frist shaping, and or, a couple sanding rounds would be nice too.

Shain I said peristerite, but it may be feldspath/ar I love the flash on those stones - I got it from the rock show this fall - did one but it flew off and hit the cement during polish... Wah!
As for a flat lap... I'll go with my diamond wheel and forgo the flat lap, I'll just have to continue doing domes! hehe
