Niiiice! When you're working this material...do you have to baby the cab to keep the sheen? or does it pretty much stay there? (i.e. others talk about working the fire agate so they can obtain the most "fire")

Hi 181Lizard, Gold sheen is much more forgiving that fire agate, they layer usually go all the way thru the stone so you have a pretty good idea as to when you will be getting out of the sheen layer, and for the most part there will be more layers underneath. The cab in the photo I had to be a bit careful with because it was an exeptionally bright gold flash, and I wanted to keep THAT layer, so I worked it lightly. For the most part it is much easier and more forgiving than fire agate. KOR Dan www.dbrockwerks.com

I love the shape of that cab. Do you use a curved wheel to get the concave (?) curve?
(I always forget which is concave and which convex...)

Thanks Arkansan, and Stefan, Arkansan, I just used normal 6 inch diamond wheels, I held the cab edge on to the wheel, until the curved grind was all the way across the edge, then you just lean the cab forward to get the doming. No special wheels. I would like to get some of those fancy wheels. KOR Dan

Thanks all, 181Lizard, the cab is roughly 30x40mm and about 18mm deep. You can see about 30% into the cab, you cannot see thru it when held to the light, but you can see a bit of the next sheen layers below the main one coming thru. If you hold the cab edge on, you can see thru the corners, pretty cool. Thanks KOR Dan

Way cool. Makes me want to work on the red piece with gold sheen I found. Do you know where your rough came from? Mexican?

I've never worked with the gold sheen obsidian but the rainbow you have to cut the right way to get the colors to show, is this pretty much the same way?

Hi rockhard, and Tweetiepy
Rockhard, I collected the Gold Sheen myself from Galss Buttes here in Oregon. There is an inbelievable amount of Obsidian there. Gold sheen is one of the more abundant varieties there. Tweetiepy, yes you do have to cut it with the bands, most of the gold sheen there comes in stones with alternating bands of Black, and Mahogany, like it is striped, you want to use those bands as a guide for your cutting. Use a black band as if you marked it yourself, and cut along the black band, this will leave the Mahogany layer just below the surface and will give you room for doming. The sheen comes from the Mahogany layers with in the banned pattern. The sheen should be perpindicular(sp?) to the bands. If these were the bands, you would want to cut up and down, (llllllllll) I hope I am explaining this ok. If it were a layer cake, you want to cut the layers off. Feel free to contact me if it needs a better explaination. Thanks, KOR Dan

Here's a slab I just picked up this weekend; You can tell the "mahogany" is a bit brighter than the reddish regular mahogany, and the sheen effect is really incredible when it gets shined up

rallyrocks, That is a great slab of gold sheen, that will make some knockout cabs. I can't wait to see the finished product. Is that Glass Buttes Obsidian? Very, very nice! Perfect example of the layering I was talking about above. KOR Dan

I have to imagine it came from glass butte, it was in a box full of chunks and slabs over at stoner's "local rock shop", I got this, a nice piece of blue/silver rainbow and a really brilliant slab of silver sheen that I can't wait to start cabbing- along with this of course.
