Hey Folks, Here are 5 new cabochons I really like out of a few days of cutting. The first two photos are of one of the Ethiopian opals I got recently. The photos are of each side. It is a freeform double dome round which I used a dop stick with wax. And I am not pleased with the polish, but its my first time working this material so any suggestions are well appreciated. This next piece of a Chatoyant Big Sur jade pebble I got from nepherite. It was a natural double dome freeform oval cabochon, all I did was sand and polish it. Nice color and a little bit of flash. Here are two examples of Blue Mtn Jasper, one from my stablizing thread, and the other was just a small slabets off of a larger piece when I made the first slab cut. IT is a natural freeform which I enjoy very much. The Yellow piece shows the fracture well, and I still make seal that further to insure it will never break, but there’s no guarantee. And this last one is just a simple Crazylace agate freeform, but my favorite freeform shape I do. A modified wing shape, as i have a few ways to pull off the same type of shape.

Super interesting bunch of cabs Shain! That's the opal that comes as thunderegg like nodule fillings is it not? Never seen it cabbed before. It's real nice! Got to say I agree with some of the other folks though. Blue Mountain=awesome!....mel

Shain - explain this to me like I'm a 3 year old Kay?
Are you saying, the first Blue Mtn. cab is one you had to stabilize first? (like stablizing turq. or chrysocolla?)
And - I see the fracture (or fractures) on the oval Blu Mtn. If you don't seal it...is it a sure thing it WILL break?
(these are all really beautiful cabs)

Thank you guys, ;D Mel, yup, and that cab came from a perfect little egg about 5 grams in weight. Look like a double sided nipple. Very durable opal and the color is unreal as the flash are huge patches on either side. The first photo shows it more as pin fire becasue of my lighting. Liz, your too cute The first blue Mtn is not stabilized in any way. The oval Blue Mtn I did stabilize to insure the cab wouldn’t break along that fracture when performing/doming the shape. That’s the misnomer with all gem jaspers. They are hard as all heck, but any fracture or weak point cause very easy failures. If I applied too much pressure when shaping it on a metal wheel. I could of broke the cab along that fracture. Opticon did not heal the fracture. My write up illustrates the point of using it to help maintain structure, vers stabilizing it. I hope that makes sence. ;D

Thanks Stefan, being this is the frist time ive work the material. And becasue its naturally dark material. Any imperfection shows up. And there seems to be some inclucion in the material as well, that tricks my eye into thinking they are straches. I have one other piece to work and finish and suspect the same, though it a highly facetable piece. The dark color messes with the eye. at least it does with mine, but it must be seen inperson to really see what im talking about.
