After trying to do my first batch of flat cabs in imitation of John’s work I learned just how hard it is to polish a flat top. I took John’s well intended advice and tried to hit it from all possible angles, working just a corner of the flat on the belt at a time to try to get the scratches out. I tried and tried. Then I took it back a few grits and tried it all again. Then I screamed loudly!! I couldn’t polish those darn flats. I wound up trying to shape a very shallow dome on each piece to finally get a shine. Then I thought about John. Here’s a nice Philly boy, raised by semi honest Italians who thought him worth feeding. In the middle of the night he leaves his home in the North with nothing but his cabbing machine and a few rocks and a dream. A cabbing dream! Where does he go? Down South. To Mississippi. To the Delta. To the Crossroads... Now we all know who it is people meet at the Crossroads to “Perfect a skill”! That’s right... The Big Red One. When John left the Mississippi Delta he began to amaze the world with his unique flat top cabs. To this day he creates these inexplicable beauties. Coincidence? I don’t think so! Judge for yourself!! C’mon John, ‘fess up. How do you do it.

I'd still love a quick rundown of how to do it - I can sometimes manage to get a kinda flat back but more often than not, they stay crappy

DOn't give up joe- (or tweet) it can be done (or so they say) as for the Devil- Well I've been to philly- and it was pretty much Hell- so on that part I think you may be on to something!- I have learned (ok I am learning- I have not yet perfected it) a trick to getting those flats - well Flat- I use a circular motion and a little bit of pressure- (a little- not a lot) to kind or rock the face up and down the wheel face- It takes a lot of time (and honestly can be very tiring on the arms) but it does work- eventually

Since picture speaks 1000 words here are my 4000 words (I am better with pics than words). These are my basic movements while working flat cabs. For small flat areas it is not necessary to move your cab to much. Three basic movements for bigger flat areas of a cab. I hope I helped a bit.
