First a nice piece of Oregon Opal Butte "common" opal, which I cabbed up several months ago, but had it break, so this is now-reshaped and fixed up Then we have my nicest spencer triplet to date, the cracks are in the opal layer, but its all nicely bound up between the obsidian back and the quartz top, pictures simply cannot capture but a fraction of the amazing color flashes in this stone; Then another doublet- this time its the Andamooka Matrix opal, this piece has such amazing color, I am hoping to get another slice from it; And finally a "side cut" piece of red horn fossillized coral;

Awesome coral and opal. First time I've seen the coral cut in that direction and it looks real nice....mel

Those look awesome. You are so brave to cut opals. They all look great, especially the Spencer. THat's my favorite. I like how the fire runs in the stone. Steve

Way to go Rally on that Spencer, yes the photo is deciing, but having worked the stuff not qiute a bit i can tell you got some nice fire there. The others are nice too, but i like that Spencer the best. I talk about stablizing some spencer on my forum, its worth it to reduce if not get rid of fractures like those when the fire is so nice. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Shain.
I should try the stabilization thing, as I think the few pieces I still have with good color are all going to be cracked to some degree.
I also thought of just taking this whole cab and slicing it along the cracks, so I'd have 4 pieces but they'd be closer to "flawless triplets"- if you can have such a thing...
But heck I'm in it as much just for the practice at this point, I also need to buy a vacuum chamber if I'm going to keep doing these, it a hassle to bring the epoxy and everything into work just to get the air bubbles out....
