Finally got pics of my Dad's cave rocks. One chunk has obviously been cut and then battered a bit over the years, I think it's the sample he bought when he was in a college class. The other is a chunk he pulled out of a cave (I'm sure it was not illegal back then ), and is much smaller in diameter. There are, I think, 2 similar chunks that are larger in dia. than the one shown. I think they would be gorgeous slabbed and mounted. And here are the pix: And, different angle: Another angle:

Hot tamales! It worked! You can click on the pix, and also, once there, on the right, check out the rest of the album that I posted. (If you want to, lol).

Very nice and colored pet wood there! The stalactites are also nice. Interesting "growth rings".

Unfortunatly Adrian those are Stalactites- Travitine based cave formations- But very beautiful and very hard to come by as it is now illegal to collect them. Karen- hold on to those- as you know they very fragile (I think a mohs 3 to 5) and you just don't see them much anymore.

All of the stuff in the album are stalactites? Some look a lot like pet wood.

I just posted the stalactites here, but the rest of the album (which you can view by clicking on the pix above) has other pix of pet wood, onyx and copper ore chunks. I was playing around with background and lighting, still trying to figure out the best way. I'm going to keep taking pix of the rest of Dad's collection, and post them in the member photographs section. Dad did a lot of spelunking back in the late 50s and early 60s, until the kids started coming in '63. He and his buddies explored some private caves, and many of the guys were also forest rangers at various national parks, and so got the opportunity to explore some of those caves more extensively than the general public.

Those are so cool, I didn't know it was illegal to collect them. Not that it matters, I've never been in a cave anyway, nor will I ever be but it's interesting to know.
