These first two are Jamie's & Rodney's Hooba jasper, thanks guys for sending the examples to cut. My opinion on this stuff is mixed for the moment though. I personally wouldn't call this a jasper, as it is hard, cuts well, it does not polish easy. I have yet to get a polish on these i am happy with. The red areas did polish better than the yellow areas. The patterns are quite fun and the contrast is top notch. They sent me two pieces, and these cab came only from one of those pieces. The other piece does have more red, but less contrast. to be honest, this material does remind me of tiffany stone in its "mixture" way about it. The second cab has these little flower like inclusions, which reminds me of Confetti Chrysocolla. I did enjoy working this material. But would like to figure out a good polish for it. And see what else becomes before i make up my mind on it. I might of shown this Blue mt cab before, but had to take a new photo because i lost the old ones. It roughly over 1.5inches tall. Has a nice dust storm over the mountain pattern. These last one are a Robinson Ranch agate & quartz Doublet, Aussie opal, Dryhead, and a nice piece of Jamie & Rodney's Chrysocolla.

Love that Robinson cab, Shain . . . like a gnarly 500 year old Oak. Blue Mt. dust storm's a great picture as well.

Nice SHain- I just started a Hooba Jasper and I'm intersted to see what becomes of it- and to hear your take on it- So far i've just worked the 100 belt and all seems ok- other than a pretty strong smell (almost organic in nature) At first I thought I was using to much pressure- but I have been really making a conscious effort to lighten up on my course grinding- then I decided that it was from the rock (not unusual as I often get some interesting smells from jaspers, fossil, corpralite) I am wondering what polish you have tried so far?

Cher...doublet & triplet are a term used in cabbing, especially with opal. (ammolite too I think)
doublet = 2 layers triplet = 3 layers
Anyone...correct me if I miss-speak: opal material is delicate & expensive. Sometimes also on the thin side so clear material is "glued" on back of opal (doublet) and on top & bottom. (triplet) You can then work the thicker material for your cabs. ( this isn't "the difinitive" explaination...rough only)

All correct, but the clear material is glued on top. Usyally black material is glued on back.
Shain - Love the duststorm.
I have about 1.5 lbs of Hooba jasper pieces and slabbetts incourse grind. There has been a little undercutting, and the material has some fractures that break when slabbing. ALso, there are occasional crevases in some pieces. I guess they could be filled.
I will try to get pics up the next time I change grit. Some of the patternis nice, but I am still on the fence because there seems to be a lot of waste too. I am not sure it is a good investment for Jamie unless there is suspicion the deposit will get more solid.

Thanks everyone! ya kown, that Blue mt is my Fav. the detail is just so ncie. spikeict- yup, it is a high dome, or thicker cabochon than what i normally do. But it is a cabochon. Cher- Liz got the anwser to that one. This doubet has a thin piece of Plume agate, capped with a clear piece of quartz. though ive done this method before on regency plume. Bob Rush over on my forum showed this method off a while ago for Black plumes. Which often get lost in the cabochon becasue its black. So if you cut it super thin and capp it with quartz. It really makes the pattern stand out so much nicer than if it would a normal cabochon. Bob also will cap both sides and make it a triplet. Having quartz on either side, and super thin piece of plume in the middle. As far as a polish for the hooba jasper, all i ahve tried thus far is 50K diamond with a tiny amount of optical cerium. On a resin belt. This is my standard polish. And i only use other compounds for turquoise and chrysocolla. And then recently a wax compound for a hugh amount of Fordites i am cutting. I try to stay away from other polishing compounds for the sake of mess and space. Daniel, i agree. It is nice stuff no dout. Just would like to wait to see if it get better before i jump on the wagon.
