I first want to say hello to everyone as I am new here. I have just now started reading some post and see all kinds of awesome stones. Hopefully with a little of all your help I will grow into this hobby. As of right now all I have is the El-cheapo smithsonian tumbler Lol but If I like doing this I will invest in a nice setup. I have a bunch of the emeralds and ruby's and other rough stones you can buy off ebay for cheap money and would like to start by tumbling those to decide if this is for me or not and I picked up the grit and polish recomended here on this web page so now I was wondering if anyone could give me good way to start this off. Any help would be greatly appreciated seeing I am a complete greenhorn. Doc

Hi Doc,
Welcome! You'll find that everyone on this site is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I have had the best luck with agates, jaspers, anything with quartz. Just make sure that you tumble rocks with a similar hardness so that they don't turn to dust.

I'd recommend agates as well. It's hard and will take a nice polish. I've had some luck with ruby (corundum) as well, but because it is so hard it takes a long time.
First bit of advice: don't rush through the first grind. Use as many cycles as it takes to get your stones very smooth. The rest of the cycles after that willl go quicker and you'll be happier with the results.
