I was wondering if you could use a solid metal wheel, like the ones from JadeCarver, on a Genie? I don't know if the extra weight of a solid metal wheel may damage the bearings or other stuff on a Genie.
What do you think?
I am thinking of getting a sintered wheel, but I don't want to ruin the motor on the Genie

I think that an excellent questions Rally. but maybe best for DP to anwser. Then if anything were to happen. At least they told you it would work? I know balancing wheels on a arbor is an important part of a grinder. I dont know any DP machines, can you change the wheel spacing? If so, you should be able to balance the wheel if weight is a factor. Though it still would be nice to hear it from someone with the experince and not from the sales guy.

Cal - I don't think the weight of a sintered wheel would make the slightest difference. Don't forget the Genie can also take trim saw and lap plate attachments, and working either one of them would probably strain the motor more.
I would put the heavier sintered wheel right next to the motor and not on the end of the shaft.

Rich's idea is a good one- to put the heavy wheel toward the center. I imagine once it gets going, the momentum will keep the strain on the motor to a minimum. I bet if you let it get up to spped good you will have no problem. This coming from someone who's never used a Genie (one day I hope), so I may not be the best one to say. Steve

I put a heavy sintered wheel on my machine; it isn't a genie. It has been on there for about 8months I put it up next to the motor. It has been working fine.

Doesn't the genie come with two hard wheels? an 80 and a 220?

The hard wheels that come with the Genie have a fibreglass/plastic core, only the outside rim is metal. I don't know the weight, but the weight of JadeCarver's wheel is significantly heavier.
Putting the heaviest wheel on nearest the motor is a good idea. I'll send a message to DP and see what they say.
Thanks all for your input.

I think it would be okay as long as you don't hang the heavy wheel out at the end of the shaft. It will take longer to get up to speed and won't stop turning as fast when you shut it down, but shouldn't put any extra strain on the bearings. Does jadecarver sell sintered wheels?

My Johnson Brothers sintered wheel is described as being "dymanically balanced at the factory".It has "divots"drilled into the rim for that and that should help.Genies are well-made and strong.Lots of people run buffs, drums, smaller carving wheels etc.In other words,I wouldn't worry.Mike.
