With all of the slabs that I have been doing on the Workforce, I decided to try making some cabs of sorts. I Don't have a true grinder, but instead used my shop metal grinder to shape some pieces. They are mostly softer Jaspers, with a couple of others mixed in. It was alot harder than I thought , but with some practice, this might work. Here they are - try not to laugh too hard!! Some Picture Jaspers... A couple of Poppies... A really dark Sandstone Jasper... A marble-like Idontknowite... And last, a Crazy Lace end cut... Thanks for looking!

I hope my first cabs turn out that well. I liked the first one on the left the best. Greg

Why laughing, in my opinion there are at least 3 great cabs there: first picture jasper, triangled poopie and the blue one.

I like em' very good for any kind of grinder.
Your poppies look an awful lot like leopardskin jasper - the blue one is very nice
Are you gonna put them through the tumbler after that?

Love those picture jaspers!
The poppies are actually leopardskin jasper(?) which I believe is actually a rhyolite (?), and I think your marble Idontknowite might be blue lace agate cut parallel to the bands instead of cross.
And I don't think there's a way to screw up crazylace! Great pieces!

I agree with Rhonda, I think it's blue lace too. Love the cut, that's really cool. There's nothing wrong with shaping them like that, gotta start somewhere. I do most of my shaping on the workforce, works really good. Get 'em in the tumbler now, be looking forward to seeing them shine.

Thanks everyone! I really need to get a cabbing unit though - it would make it so much easier to shape without having to spray the wheel down with a bottle. I plan to finish them in the tumbler in the polish stage. You guys are right about the Leopard Skin Jasper - they were such small pieces to start with and have such a defined pattern. They do resemble Poppies. I am not sure about the blue stone - I had first thought of Blue lace agate too. This stuff is very soft - about a 3-4 on the scale - you can literally snap a 1" thick piece in your hands. It is very chalky and most of the smoothing came with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper in about 5 minutes. It was not a very good piece for finishing, but it gave me a chance to try some techniques for shaping.

Nothing wrong with these cabs, but you're right, it's a lot easier on a cabbing machine. Very good start though.
