Between you and Ed I could spend a fortune buying these cabs. As always a great Job! Would you take my first born for one? haha

That stuff is wild!
Where do you get it?
Is it stabilized at all?
How tough to cut?

I have come to believe that Tony has a corner on the market because the pieces he's cutting up are bigger than any I've seen for sale anywhere. But it is found in one area in southwest Queensland Australia, known as the Koroit Opal fields, not to be confused with the town of Koroit, Victoria, Australia
It generally doesn't require much stabilization, although some of the ironstone can be a bit porous in places.
As for cutting, its like playing a slot machine for a lot of us, you give it a try and either wind up with a useless piece of brown rock, or if things spin in your favor you get a brilliant unique gemstone.
Although I expect that experience and talent come into play, as nephrite Tony and stoner Ed seem to get only great stuff, while all of my boulder opal efforts have seemed like wasted time.

Pete you're right as I have found the inside corner on the stones. Its called CASH!!!!! I think there is a a trick to cutting the right pattern. I wasn't having much luck until I bought the book "Opal cutting made easy" It really helped me out. I highly recommend it for beginners.

I've never seen or heard of Koroit before! It's breathtaking! Of course, the mineral would be nothing without the artisan who crafted it, and you did a marvelous job. *CHEERS*

My curiosity got the better of me (as usual) and I decided to learn a bit about Koroit. Koroit isn't a town, it's what they've named a huge opal mining area. Here's the map which shows it: OMG is this stuff expensive! Here's a link to a page where cabs are being sold wholesale: www.koroit.com/opalsforsale.htmlKoroit cabs are a LOT cheaper on eBay, though. I even watched a video that shows it being mined. Pretty cool.
