I am now officially hooked and want a Genie so baaaad! My buddy bought a bunch of equipment from a rockhound here in Utah, and he told him he could come by anytime with questions, to learn or just talk rocks. Well...today after work we met each other at his house and had the time of our lives. I've said it before and will say it again, Rockhounders are the most generous, friendly and down-to-earth people you will ever meet. We were just talking rocks, and tips etc...and we ended up in the basement of his house picking out a slab and getting our first tutorila on cabbing. From marking the cab, dopping the rock, and going through the 6 steps on the genie. I am so hooked now and I can't wait to start doing more. It's one thing to read about how to cab, but when your fortunate to get direct hands on information, it can't be beat! I decided to pick out a picture jasper, and here's the finished product. I am so stoked, and he even had a setting and chain. When we were ready to leave, he gave each of us a gift as well. A beautiful belt buckle and a superb Dino Cab set in it. He told us anytime we wanted to come and play we were more than welcome. He has had 3 heart attacks and he mostly does silver casting and jewelry. He is one of the nicer gentlemen I've had the pleasure meeting. We were there for about 3 hours. BTW, my buddy bought a Lortone 18" saw, and several other pieces of equipment(which all work) for 900.00. Sorry for the long read, but hey, it's my 1st cab, and I'm still grinning from ear to ear. Excellent job Steve. So now you know why I sit there and churn out cabs all the time, it's just too much fun to stop. So now it's time to order the diamond wheels for one of the grinders you picked up last year. I usually tell people to keep their first cab so they can look back and have a good laugh, but in your case, there's nothing to laugh about. That came out great.

Thanks you guys! I do know what I want for Christmas now. I honestly couldn't believe how relaxing it was, and I what a great stress relief it is. I cut some more slabs tonight after work, and I'm going to attempt more cabbing on Saturday...using my grinders. I just need to pick up a torch, and make me one of those slanted cab holder thing-a-ma-jigs. Anyone know the slant angle?? Steve

How great for you. I bet the best part was being able to pick the brain of an old master. Learning how to cab is great -- and you did a terrific job -- but learning from an experienced rockhound is even better. Sweet looking cab you made there.
And it wasn't a long read at all. If anything, it was too short. Glad you had the experience. Thanks for letting us share in it.
