I have the chance to buy a used Covington welt belt grinder in really good shape. Uses 3" wide- 24" long belts. How much trouble would it be to use this for shaping and polishing cabochons? I know most grinders for creating cabochons have more then one belt. I was figuring I could preform and rough grind a bunch of cabs at one time- then change belts accordingly. Would it be a pain in the neck? Or would it be worthwhile?

I think you really need a hard diamond wheel to shape. Otherwise it would take forever. But for sanding and smoothing it would work well. If the price is right it might would be worth it for the finishing stages.

I would be mostly making square or rectangle cabochons as I have no use for ovals or rounds. All I would have to do is slab the material - then cut into proper shapes- grind and polish.
