Has anyone here made small cabs like 4 - 5 mm in length? I'm curious about your technique in making these.

Rocky G: I find the small cabs kind of easy to mess up because the small size makes it real easy to grind them too much too fast. It is much faster to grind the crowns though because of the smaller size and they polish super fast because it's easy to eliminate flat spots on the smaller surface area. Instead of dop sticks, I use nails as dops. Small cabs stick real well with dop wax. You can even stick the nail into a large dop stick to make it easier to handle...Mel

It's just the same process as larger cabs, except like Mel says, it goes a lot faster. And you need really good eyes to see what your doing! I even did a 7 or 8mm fire agate by hand, and I have the finger nails to prove it!!!

I have quite a few small stones that have good color and would make nice little cabs. My shaky hands may not allow me to get that small. Haha

I have cut down to 2 mm opal cabs. I use cut down aluminum knitting needles and super glue. Start with 200 grit belt and then move to the spool polisher and diamond paste. Be very careful removing the stones, I use warm soapy water. Takes a little practice and a light touch.......Bob PS...... The small solid knitting needles work for tightening wire wraps and scribing cabs also.

Thank you for the info. I was thinking it would be a good idea to start with a fine wheel.
