Man, I've got to work on my lighting. Just too bright to take pics here on a sunny day. Guess I need one of those light cages to eliminate glare. Anyway, apologize for all the reflections. Just a few cab pics I took while messing with my camera: Condor Agate: Another matched pair of condors with my ugly dome reflected in the pic *L* Cactus Lace Agate: An unusual dark version of Guadalupe Poppy Jasper: Left: Teanaway Moss Agate from Washington, right: Lavic Plume Agate from CA. And finally: Dendritic Limestone from Lake Valley, New Mexico. Love this stuff and it often contains fossil corals and crinoids too:

Those are great Mel, I can even see myself in the shine. Which is kind of strange if you think about it.

Susan: Lake Valley, one of my favorite collecting spots, is on the road between Nutt and Hillsboro about 13 miles NW of Nutt. Nutt is about 30 mile NE of Deming. Lake Valley is an old ghost town and if the mine is open to collecting, it's a bonanza of neat stuff including great fossils. It was closed when we were last there but along the road to the north are tons of fossils and all kinds of neat stuff if you hike around...Mel

I just love these weekends when everyone is posting pics of cabs and cool stuff. It's been a while since you "Wowed" us with your cabs Mel...what a heck of a shine! I think I can see Spike looking in at them too...which is realy strange! Really like your condors, and that dark poppy jasper is very unique. Great cabs. Steve

They are all beauties, especially for someone who had claimed he wasn't "good at makin' cabs"; but that Cactus Lace Agate and the Dendritic Limestone--those are prize winners for me!

*L* Thanks so much for the nice comments you guys but I've seen the cabs done by Ed, Shain, Zoran and many others ( Silverhawk makes me want to cry he's so good) and I only wish I was that good! I think my main problem with making myself cab is it bothers me to even cut up a nice slab for cabbing, especially if I have to virtually gut it for the best pattern. Don't know why but it just seems like a shame to chop them up when they are so pretty whole....Mel

Oh I should have mentioned. A really nice shine can be achieved on most materials with optical grade tin oxide on leather. The kind of TO that's used for polishing telescope lenses. Just wet the pad with a spray bottle till the stone kinda feels like its dragging a bit and it seems to pull that shine right out. It's fairly expensive but I've been using the same pound for twenty years as it takes just a fine dusting on a moist pad to charge it....Mel
