How does one create cabs? Is there a site or thread you could point me to? Thanks

Great question! I'm glad you asked and for the reply. Thanks so much for all of us who are still learning.

That is a great tutorial. I've read it twice now and will most likely read it a few more times once I actually get a cabbing machine. Trying to cab with a saw and vibrating tumbler right now.

I just found on You Tube 9 minute video "From Rough Agate to polished cabochon" . Take a look.

I highly recommend the DVD "Beginning Cabochon Cutting" from MarZee Tutorials. They are about 1 1/2 hour long, professionally produced and cover everything from preforming, dopping, grinding, polishing, etc. I learned a lot of neat tips when I watched it and I'm not supposed to be a beginner. (Shameless plug - yes I sell them only $16)

Wow. That's a lot of equipment for someone who doesn't have a local club. Is it possible to cut slabs to shape then tumble them smooth?

It certainly is. Trey at Woodward Ranch had a shop full of jewelry he made by cutting flat cabs and finishing in a vibrating tumbler. His stuff looks good flat as does Montana Agate and other moss and plume type materials with thin inclusions. I've also seen lots of hammer broken slabs rotary tumbled and then wire wrapped. The edges round off but you still have a flat cab. If you want domes you have to have equipment.

A lot of us will tumble finish cabs- All my mistakes and "difficult" pieces go into the tumble pile- I've seen some amazing work done with just a simple tile saw and a tumbler! on a side note- John Nice having you aboard!
