I am getting ready to finally start cabbing and want to dop with superglue, I have it and it doesn't require yet another tool in the shop. It seems pretty straight forward only I don't know how to get the stone off of the dop stick. I usually use acetone when I need to remove CA (cyanoacrylate) glue but don't think that would be good for the stones. How do you get them off? TIA

I'm a bad example, last time I used superglue I fought with the tube and spent 30 minutes trying to get it out of my fingers... - Superglue is NOT MY friend - good luck though!

Acetone or MEK thinner will both dissolve super glue, but I think acetone is faster. I used to use super glue for dopping and I used acetone to remove the glue. It does not hurt any stone that I know of. In case you did not know this already, try using the thick super glues and spray the stone with super glue accelerator before you set the stone on the dop. T he glue will harden very quickly that way.

When I bought Super Glue at the hobby store, they also had an Un-cure/debonder. The bottle doesn't name the secret ingediant. I also have a tube of super glue remover from Duro. The package says it contains Acetone.
After applying, wait few minutes, then using a utility knife to "cut" through the glue. Watch out the cab has a tendancy to go flying. I use wood dowels, but I also saw someone who uses plexiglass tubing as a dopping stick. Less contact area on the tubing. I haven't tried this, yet

I stick it in the freezer for a while. Pops right off. That's using a nail or a screw with superglue. If I want to use a wooden dowel I use 5 minute epoxy and use a razor to work under the edge of the glue then soak it overnight in water. It pops right off too. T

I have been using wood glue. The only time it gets soft is when I am polishing and the stone gets hot. I just set it aside and let it cool and then right back at it. I have had no problems at all. I just soak the stick in warm water for about 15 minutes and the glue just pulls right off!!

That would be me who uses the plexiglass tubing for dops. I like it better than wood because the amount of surface in contact with the stone is reduced and makes it easier to remove. I use 3/8" tubing for most cabs and 1/4" tubing for the smaller ones. I use the method Cal described to remove them.

For some reason I have never been able to get super glue to stick to plexiglass. I use either wooden dowels or cut down knittin needles. Caution must be used with softer stones such as opal as I have tried to force the bond apart ever so slightly and taken an ugly bite out of the back of the stone. Unless I am working a very small opal I like to use wood so I can cut it off the stone if the bond gives me any trouble........Bob

Ive always used super glue. The stuff in the tubes is too messy. Get the kind in the bottle with the applicator brush. Very simple and no mess. I have never used chemicals to remove the glue from my cabs. I heat up a cup of water in the microwave and put the dopsticks and cabs in there until they fall off.
On the other hand, I have just started cutting opals and the boiling water in the microwave trick wont work for that.

Starbond bottle says use nail polish remover containing acetone. All the other CA companies sell solvents/debonders without the secret ingredient listed. It shouldn't affet the stones but you could always try a drop on a piece of scrap first.

Thanks all. I've used the acetone to get CA off my fingers but just wasn't sure about stones. I will probably try the hot water or freezer first though as acetone causes liver damage. I always try to avoid chemicals if I can.

I dont know about anyone else but for me personally I just didnt want to deal with melting wax, a dop pot etc. in my dining room that has wall to wall carpet. I am a klutz and I could just imagine a "dop wax accident". So I use super glue in a no mess bottle with an applicator brush, and havent had a disaster yet. In fact, I havent even glued my fingers together (although now that Ive said that, it will probably happen). Im sure dop wax works great because a lot of people use it. But you know how it is when you find something you like.........

Dop wax would be fine if I wanted to buy a dop pot, dop wax and sit around and wait for it to get to temperature. I already have superglue for woodturning (5 different viscosities) so want to use that. Actually I have already used it. I used the gel type and have started working on 4 cabs. 3 worked out fine, the 4th, a piece of mahogany obsidian fell off on the third wheel. Stopped, wiped it off, reglued and went on. Seems to work great without the hassle (and expense) of a dop pot. I have to wait another week until I get my expandable drum to keep working these stones so I haven't tried getting them off yet. ;D

I use a tart burner (ceramic do-dad for making the house smell good) my wife had lying around, it works great. I light the candle melts in just minutes. I use an old iron turned upside down on my bench to heat the stone and stick. john
