Hey All, I began cabbing in April of this year and have been learning the mechanics, sticking with circles, oval, squares and pre-made mounts. On Columbus Day I decided to let my artistic side take the lead. What do you think? First up some of Mel's stuff (lavic sliding jasper) very nice material. Two sided cab. Beefjello sent me a little piece of Koroit sp? Not sure on this two sided cab! I think Beef sent this too. 2 side also! Not sure on this material, it is two side but only one picture is decent. I had an impatient little boy with me. This material is very porous and looks good but tough to get shiny.

I say let your imagination run wild John! I think some of the best finished pieces i've seen here were freehands. Let the stone decide what form it wants to take and if it doesn't want to conform to a conventional mount then don't argue! Very nice freehands BTW, now the question is, what custom mounting strategies are you considering?

Very interesting,I personally dop and freehand, the stone dictates the choice.Your use of the freehand shows talent. The bigger question is how much skin did you lose? What can you tell me about the lavic sliding jasper?I have never seen it before, really attractive material. Brad

Thanks guys! Rob, I plan to let my wife make the jewelry from now on. She has a flair for design. She will her make her own custom beads and store bought too and I will figure a way to mount it to her specs. Wire, drill, something!
Brad, I just lost a little skin on one tip and 30% of the nail. A small price to pay. LOL The lavic sliding jasper came from Mel, Sabre52. You will have to send out the bat light for him to give the low down. It is nice, hard but not super hard probably a 7 or so. It had no fractures and just a few pitted spots. It worked very easy and was forgiving. best I can tell you! john

I always favor the freeforms. The calibrated cuts are a creation of mass production. If you are wire wrapping, making custom bezels, beaded bezels or drilling to mount them; then doing a calibarated cut is in exercise in precision; IMHO. You got some great shapes and in the second to last cab; piced 3x you really went with the flow in the stone.

Love the shapes John! I agree with what some have said about letting the stone choose. I have found that if I try to fight it and do it MY way, the stone wins lol. I gotta go with the lavic as my favorite, its very striking.

Nice job John, now wasn't that fun? There's nothing wrong with ovals, they have their place, but cutting freeforms let's the creative juices flow.
Stoneage Industries sells some really nice Lavic siding jasper.

Sorry if I gave the wrong impression about ovals or rounds. I like all shapes. I believe the freeform shapes do not limit the artist. The point I was trying to make is that calibrated cuts are really intended for pre-made mass produced bezel cups. 1. overseas they mass produce those so you can not compete on price when trying to sell. 2. They are not easy to do; so if you are doing it and don't need to be that precise; just realize you really don't have too; unless you want too. I've done rounds and ovals that were not calibrated and they came out nice. Sometimes I look at a slab and a round or oval would look the best. Basically, I hate doing calibrated cuts (mostly because it is a fun sucker for me LOL) and it is done overseas so cheaply that if you are selling you can't compete on price.
