Hi all,
I have a very good friend who loves the color purple. I have a baggie of amethyst quartz crystals........nice stripey white/clear/purple crystals. How hard would it be to cab this material?
Thanks!
Shannon
PS-As slow as I am, Im getting into christmas mode and trying to get my christmas projects going now. ;D

I've had decent luck with it...as long as the piece is solid. The fractured stuff tends to, well, fracture. I have a large chunk of chevron amethyst I'll be slabbing this weekend with the hope that I can get some unfractured areas. It's beatiful, but I cry when pieces fall apart as soon as the dop is removed.

As stated you really have to watch for fractures,I personally give my cabbing amythst a ride in the tumbler first.I run it with pellets for a few days. This usually allows any fracured material to break then instead of when you remove it from the dop.It cuts just as good as a hard agate no undercutting or pitting after the coarse wheel.

Hey, nice amy cab Showtime! C'mon Tweet, you're gonna have to settle the score with that amethyst SOME time. I bought a slat of amethyst at the last show and I think I can be "won" with the stone - it's not that bad - I think tumbling them is the problem - my tumbled ones turned out pretty nice - I can't complain really, as I've been lucky with tumbling, the cabbing might be another issue (where is that darn Genie - Dean are you bringing one next time you visit me?!?)
