Roxy, one of the hardness tests is to scratch with a knife. Serpentine will scratch with a knife while jade , jasper and agates won't. I don't think you would want to carve it with a knife though. When I first started in this crazy hobby I went with a club to Jade Cove area in CA. The jade was very elusive but the beach was full of serpentine. I found a cab size piece I thought would make a nice cab. A gal saw it and said "oh, that's just a piece of serpentine". I cabbed it anyway and took it to a beginning wire wrap class and made a pendant. We returned to the same area the next year with the same club and I asked my wife to wear it on the trip. As luck would have it, the same lady spotted it and went on and on about what a beautiful pendant. I couldn't wait to say to her "oh, it's just a piece of serpentine".

Jim that serp you are finding is really nice stuff. You're making me jealous. Of course that's not too hard to do seeing as I live in PA. LOL Actually we have some serpentine along the Delaware river not too far from my house. Once the weather warms up I plan on wading out there to see what I can find. Yours has really inspired me to look. Thanks.
