Here are last evenings efforts at creating more preforms. Boy, gotta love those Bots as they are almost preshaped right from the nodule. Have to start cutting thinner slabs though. Those 1/4 ich and thicker pieces take forever to shape. Anyway, thanks for looking....Mel Tried a closeup of this one as this stuff is quite rare, Owlhead Mountains sagenite with a little moss. Hard to cab too as the sagenite often undercuts. Be interesting to see if I can polish this one without messing it up. Sorry for the lousy pics. For some reason, this one didn't come out very sharp.

These are looking so cool. Know what you mean about thinner slabs-got a bucket full of thick slabs myself that I know will take fer-ever to pre-shape.

I love that red tear. I'm looking for the finished cabs, they must come out great.

Hi Mel - beautiful rocks as usual!!
Can you help me out? I see that on some of your preforms there are marks etched onto them - is that to help with making a dome? How do you use them?
Being a newbie I'm always looking at ways to get better shapes/domes etc.
Thanks!!!

ErboJ: *L* Sorry to admit that I kind of fly by the seat of my pants when making preforms and simply try to get the best out of the slab. Some of those you see posted I kind of doodled on to play with possible shapes and get them balanced the way I want and some I premarked for calibrated cabs and then while grinding, decided to go ahead and make them freeforms cause it looked like more fun. Before I dop these stones, I will mark a bezel line to help me grind the bezel straight and I will mark the approximate center of the stone to guide the doming process. Mainly though, I just wing it and grind by intuition....Mel
