Is there a book on creating cabs that is generally regarded as being good for the layman wanting to make the transition from tumbling to doing cab work? thanks.

Some older but excellent books. Gem Cutting by John Sinkankas Lapidary Carving by Henry Hunt This one is by one of the founders of the San Francisco Gem Society and it has some really interesting background information on early lapidary techniques. It is hard to find though. The Art of the Lapidary (1950) by Francis Sperisen. Amazon might carry the first two. Bob

There is a very good DVD "Beginning Cabochon Cutting" available from MarZee Tutorials, e-mail marzeetutorials@znet.com. They advertise in Rock & Gem in the R&G Shopper ads. They are $20 including shipping. I sell them at shows for $16 each but don't know if they would be any cheaper with mailing. They are about 1 1/2 hours, done professionally and cover everything from preforming to finish. They are done at a beginner's level but had several good tips for the experienced cutter as well (at least I learned a few neat tricks).
