Hi All,
Well, tonight starts our family's christmas over at my aunts house. We draw names for gifts and I drew my cousin's name. As she likes delicate things I decided to make her a boulder opal pendant.
As usual, i am working up til the last minute and just now finished polishing hers, and another BO cab. Unfortunately, Murphy's Law has taken over, which usually seems to happen to me when I have a close deadline for something. HER boulder opal cab polished out real dull. You know how some have a softer matrix that doesnt polish as well? Well, thats what its like but I wasnt expecting it as its a real deep colored ironstone. The other cab that isnt for my cousin came out with a brilliant shine and it has lighter colored ironstone. Go figure. Here's the Murphy's Law.........the cab with the beautiful shine has less fire. The cab with the dull look has the best color play........blues and purples. I dont know what to do!!!
Is there any fix for this stubborn BO cab that just doesnt want to take a polish? I already took it up to 50,000 diamond and its just not working. The other one shined up spectacularly using cerium after 600 grit. Again, go figure. Would ZAM help on something like this or is this nicely colored, dull matrix opal just doomed? I go to my aunts house in about 3 hours.

Two coats of crystal gloss acrylic nail polish followed by some careful zam buffing?

Well, I ended up using that cab anyway. It wasnt that it was totally dull, it just only had a "sheen" instead of a good shine. I figured it was best to use the cab with the best color. I gave the pendant to my cousin tonight and she was very pleased with it. Unfortunately, I got it finished just minutes before leaving so I didnt even get a chance to take a picture of it.
Thanks LCARS for taking the time to respond.
