Howdy folks, Well did a little cabbing last night. Just decided to go ahead and work up some of the soft stones before I do much on the agates. I also was just getting to a slab of Woodward Peanut Agate when I stumbled on an even larger slab in the pile so I did a 38 x 52 perform. I'm thinking this is one of the prettier pieces of Peanut I found at Woodward. Here're the pics. Thanks for lookin....Mel The Peanut Agate preform ready for the dop: Texas Golden Horn Coral cab replaced by calcite so it's a soft stone: I know this one has a caliche filled pit and is a bit irregular. I just rounded off the natural cross section a bit and cabbed it. Needed an example for my polishible fossils collection and I'll try for a more perfect specimen next time. Oaxaca Travertine. Just a oval salvaged from a slab scrap. I actually prefer large cabs of this material as they show more pattern. Another freeform cab from a salvaged scrap of C. B Lambert Ranch pink crinoidal limestone I collected on my last trip to the Texas Hill Country.

All right, Mel! Cabs!
I like the peanut agate best. That's some cool stuff. How did you polish the coral? Zam? I have some and it refuses to tumble.

Curt: I use optical grade tin oxide on a leather pad just damp enough to pull at the cab surface. Shines calcite hardness stuff like a mirror but you do have to press pretty hard for the stone to drag so you have to watch heat buildup or you'll crack the cabs. Before I learned the touch, I cracked the most beautiful slab of travertine I've ever cabbed and boy was I pissed *L*....Mel

Agateheaven: C. B. Lambert Ranch is about 2 miles west and 7 south of San Saba, Texas. Small town and everybody knows everybody so you can get directions and phone numbers in town. Kids probably have the ranch now as C.B. Was pretty old maybe 15 years ago....Mel

Nice cabs Mel, and I must say, it's about time! Just kidding. I got a great shine on the yellow horn coral using diamond paste.
