I have been thinking and thinking about what I could do for a contest.
This is what I came up with. It's what I know and love, aside from rocks.
A Recipe/Cooking contest!!
Rules are still in the works, help me out, folks!
My ideas for categories:
1. Rock related recipes, such as Hard Rock Candy, Rock Hard Biscuits, Stone Soup, etc.
2. Quick and Easy Recipes for Busy Rockhounds. 30-minutes or less prep, 7 or less ingredients. Include your rock-related reasons for being in a hurry.
3. Favorite recipe; not sure how to relate it to rocks. Perhaps people could post the recipe w/a picture of a rock? Such as Moss Agate Spinach Dip, or Romanian Pet Wood White Lasagna?
4. Rock Hounding in the Rough. Campfires are so fun; cooking on campfires is a challenge, but so rewarding.
So, that's your challenge, folks. Help me refine this contest! And, yes, I will need a 'cooking panel'. Any offers?
Ultimate goal? RTH cookbook, online in .pdf form.
I will leave you with one of my favorite, quick and easy recipes:
Easy Alfredo Sauce
Melt together, gently, stirring often, on the stove or in the microwave:
1 8 oz. brick of cream cheese (low fat is fine) 1 stick of butter (prefered, but margarine will do) 1/2 cup milk (I use skim) 3 oz. of REAL parmesan (NOT the dried stuff). 1 tsp. diced garlic (from a jar) Your choice of herbs.
Serve over hot pasta.
You can add pretty much anything to the sauce, such as ham, bacon, chicken, shrimp, crab....

I'm really not much of a cook myself.

Karen, Interesting concept. Tough getting rocks involved since we don't eat them. How about recipes for foods that look like a certain rock? Don't know if that's feasible or too much work for people, I'll give it more thought. If you need any help on the food end let me know. My wife and I are big foodies. Actually her whole family is including her little sister who is a food writer and editor for the New York Times and is in the process of writing her third food book. (first two were best sellers) Tony M

Karen, What a neat idea! I'll be happy to help. I can cook & bake. It sounds really complicated right now, though. How about making it 4 different contests, one every month or so? I also like Tony's idea for recipes that look like rocks - the contestant would show us a picture of what they made. Hmmm, I'm already thinking lasagne, 7 layer dip, etc. Say the photo has to look like the rock they name it after - but can it be as general as agate, or should it be a specific agate...? They would need to provide a photo of the rock, too... but what about food specifically sculpted to look like a certain rock, would that count? Hmmmm. Maybe 2 different categories: food that looks like a rock as you normally prepare it, and food that you prepare so that it looks like a certain rock (for example, jello pudding isn't usually made as a swirl of vanilla and butterscotch and strawberry and.... ) Wait, wait, a contest where people use food to create rocks, either real (picture provided) or imagined. If imagined/imaginary, they get to make up a name, too. Or YOU sculpt food into a known or unknown rock, and people have to guess what YOU used to make it? Am I bizarre or what? Fun, but complicated! Let me know if any of this sounds good, I'll keep bouncing ideas with you! Amy

Cooking's Cool! I tend to cook everyday but turned veggie about 12 months ago - so still learning how to crank it up a bit with just vegatables and a few other non-meaty ingredients - cheese, eggs etc.... And no - I don't eat a lot of pumpkin! I still cook for Susie too, and she couldn't take not having meaty stuff, so I'm always looking for new recipes. I really do hope you get this one off the ground Karen! It sounds great! For another category - how about Food in the field? What to eat while out on day trips collecting rocks, (and give it a rock inspired title of course!) somthing easy to eat - preferably with grubby hands, no fuss, no cleanup, and delicious too! Of course the other obvious one would be a cake baking contest! I like cake!!!!!! And folks go mental with icing and stuff, seen some really awesome cakes, I think that might be a good category too.... Best of luck - can't wait to see what you come up with! H

Count me in, Karen. This is a Dream Contest--food, rocks, recipes, cooking, baking, pictures!!! WOW!
There are some fun foods out there with rock names...Rock Candy, Rocky Road Ice Cream, Marble Cake...ooooo...now I'm getting hungry!
Love the idea of an ongoing RTH cookbook!

Hmmm...
This looks more like four contests to me. I like all four ideas, but I'd stick with one at a time.

Oh this could be lots of fun! We have to go camping in a few weeks -- camping at 8500' elevation in October -- sheesh! -- with my son's fifth grade class -- yeah, we just came down the hill and now we have to go back up and this time do camping the old fashioned way, in a tent! And without a cook or main dining lodge! Aye! Not sure how these old bones are gonna take to it after being spoiled in a cabin all summer. I can see the kiddoes having a blast with this one -- they're at the perfect age for coming up with food that looks like ... anything but food! ;D Of course, the grosser the better... ;D I hope there's a little time to play with here, this is going to have to percolate in the back of my brain but the results may be worth it.. ! LOL!
