I went to Castleton yesterday - its a place with a claim to being the only place on earth you can find this Blue John stone. So I got a paperweight for a competition - see who can guess the weight (in grams) of it from the picture - Im hoping it will be hard to tell its size from the picture, making it a bit trickier. The weight you guess is inclusive of the entire thing - not just the stone (as I cant weigh the stone !! ) One guess per person at the end - but you can change your guess if you want to. Heres the place its from (just for interest) - And heres the item - So - guess the weight and post here in grams and the nearest to the correct weight by Sunday morning 14th Oct will win it. Good luck Mark

I think we must guess the stone only, not including the transparent support.
In this case I say 3.65 g.
Thanks for the contest,
Adrian

Sands/Adrian - it is the whole paperweights weight - not just the stone.
Ive changed the first post to reflect that - soz.
You may wish to have another guess.
Cheers Mark

149g
As an aside - my next door neighbour used to come from that area and when he was a boy they used to find great lumps of the stuff. I asked if he still had any and he said no they never kept any - didn't think it was up to much!!!!!
You should see some of the prices it goes for on certain sites!!!
Ah well.

I'm guessing 85 grams. My mother immigrated from Nottingham with her parents as a child. She went back to visit after becomming a rockhound and was quite proud of the Blue John Stone she brought back.

Well, since it IS a paperweight & looks to be 3/16"-1/4" thick epoxy filled acrylic, it should weigh about...
270g.

Kd, it was a dull day so I didnt get many shots - heres 5 of the area I did get on sunday. Luke in the pub - i was teasing him with one pea for his dinner A shot of winnats pass through the car window on the way into the village. A view (hazy) of Mam Tor - the hill everyone likes to climb on days out. You can see them at the top. Entrance to the blue john mine, a hugely popular tourist attraction. Looking left at the blue john mine, a view of the start of the edale valley. Pics are hazy - im going to go again the next nice day (its about 25mins in the car) and do some better shots as its jigged a few memories from rockmadman, erbojones and johnjsgems - which thanks for the comments - I was collecting probably in the same spots!!! (And I kept some ). I'll put a gallery up on the pics board - theres loads to see there. Cheers Mark
