I would be glad to do a night's menu as well. I likely will not stay inthe field as many hours as some, so I don't mind helping with dinner on more thanone night. Tony's dinner in a bag idea sounds great. Cleanup sounds easier too.
Sounds like there are some folks who are up for the whole time - whatever that turns out to be - and who plan to camp and not just stay in the area. This will make a good centrally located camp site important.
I think location is a key question. While camping at Richardson's is free (and did I mention showers), I suspect it might be reserved for groups digging on their property each day. They might not complain or notice if a few folks went off somewhere else each day, but the more we look at other sites the greater the possibility that thundereggs will only be dug one day. They might not like that, or at least we should ask. I can call them and feel them out.
If one of the BLM sites has a pavilion like the BLM site in Burro Creek did, that might be better than Richardson's. When different people each night have to go from ice chests and supplies to dinner, it sure is easier if you work under a roof with a lantern or two hanging up high. ANd the good sturdy BLM tables for prep and dining were very useful as well - much better than lightweight camp tables.
There are enough small towns in the area that some kind of grocery would be within a 10 mile drive. Restocking ice and whatever else should not be a problem.

For me, I really prefer the simple approach to things. I really believe that having common meals is going to add a lot of work. I dont mind pre-planning but we could also plan this thing to death. I would rather have more time to look for rocks. I suggest we fend for ourselves for breakfasts and lunches and then have a dinner together. As others have mentioned, Jamie did a great job at Burro Creek but its an awful lot of work. Just like Tony, I come from a hunting family and I always fix meals in advance, vacuum seal them, re-heat in water and voila! Dinner is served. Heck, Jay and I backpacked on a glacier for 5 days once and we did all of our cooking on a beer can stove that I made that used denatured alcohol for fuel LOL
Some of the locations Dale is talking about are 2 hours from Richardsons and he suggested another location to camp..........today is my last day of work for 10 days so I will post this info tomorrow. I cant stress enough that Richardsons isnt ANYTHING compared to what Dale is talking about so we need to not look at this as a "Richardson" trip. The t-eggs at some of the other places are much more varied than the Richardson eggs. I was thrilled when I heard that he was willing to help us out!
Another reason for me wanting to keep things simple is that I will have my 9 year old daughter with me. She has only been to Richardsons for a day and this is going to be a very long trip for her. But she would kill me if I went without her. Im thinking we should plan a 4 day trip as Dale said he could keep us busy for that long. Those that cant stay that long or want to stay longer are obviously free to do so.

Hi everyone,
I'm sorry for not getting logged in before now to make plans...Basically I can make myself available anytime June early July...The last week of June is the Prineville Pow-Pow Madras likes the 4th of July week-end. Either Pow-Wow is fantastic and other ranches open up for these events to like Marston's... Richarsons also, man I used to live about 40 minutes from them and would go there once a week and I still never got through all their rock piles!!! So for those that can't handle the desert heat to well there is so many various rock piles in the yard...Its been over a year since I have been there but I do recall a grassy area to camp and showers/bathroom. The two warnings that come to mind is Rattlesnakes and do not window any rocks lol I was there one day and some guy was hitting one of the rocks in the rock pile and he got chewed on for it...Things there are very laid back and enjoyable... I was talking to Tony about some of the areas in the Ochocos, the Summit, Harvey Gap,Lucky Strike and Valley View, the Tube Agate Beds and theres a couple areas I love going where I find the Green moss and the Ochoco Green Jade aka Jasper. Also if your that close to Paulina it would be crazy not to check out the South Fork Limb Cast beds. Now Quant Rock shop in Prineville is real good about letting folks dig in the Tube bed usually a small fee nothing outragious for the quality of rock one gets. They also know the best spots to get the Pink limb cast... Theres a campground at a place called Walton Lake just a couple miles from the Tube Agate and Jade beds its great trout fishing, I know they have grills and Might have some full hook-ups. I can find out in the near future... Theres also some good digging near Mitchell, the Sutton's Plume bed and the Yellow Swirl Agate...I know thats a lot of places to put on the table but we have approx 6 months to arrange one killer rock digging trip and like I said I will be more than happy to look into things on this end and share some deposits with ya'll, thats the most enjoyable part of Rockhounding. I'll try and check back more often as the trip progresses and if anyone has any questions on this end just let me know. Take care-Dale Rhode

I like the idea of being able to attend one of the Pow Wows. Any meal plan works for me. I agree that having your own breakfast and lunch may be easiest. Same with dinners, either bring your own or a potluck or .... As far as rockhunting, whatever is available is fine with me. Being a fisherman, camping by the lake mentioned by Dale also sounds interesting.

Me and my family maybe interested in going depending on the dates! There is some private ranches in that area to dig on, but you need to let the owners know ahead of time and I believe they charge $1.00/lb. I can talk to some people at WAMS, and get the info on private ranches, they keep an eye on this thread, there are also 2 motels in Madris, if someone doesn't want to camp. Also Lucky Strike Mine is a couple hours drive from there, t-eggs are also $1.00/lb, but some nice eggs, got some graitfruit size 1's last year with all red colors inside, and some nice geode/t-eggs. thanks Keith

I hope to have Pow-wow info and may some recon at Richardson's in the next few weeks. The Sweethome club is also doing a field trip in 2 weeks to some of the private ranches in the area. I will report back ASAP. The Madras pow-wow is a little later this year (or was a little earlier last year). It is 2-6 JUly, so really the weekend after we have been talking about. 2-6--MADRAS, OREGON: Show, "Fourth of July Pow Wow"; All American Rock & Gem Pow Wow Club of America; Jefferson County Fairgrounds; ; camping, daily field trips, dig for agate, jasper, thunder eggs, petrified wood for a fee, bring rockhounding tools, kids' rock toss/scramble, Country Kitchen, guest speakers, music, auction, bingo, door prizes, more than 75 vendors, rough rock, finished jewelry, equipment; contact Rocky McCall, 8330 272nd NW, Stanwood, WA 98292, (360) 629-2515; e-mail: rm711@tgi.net Still some may want to linger in the area for this, come late to the RTH trip and than stay for the pow-wow. Folks who live close enough may want to come for the beginning of the RTH trip, and then come back a week later for a day or two of the pow-wow.

I talked to a guy today that knows the RIchardson's ranch pretty well. He says the campsite is pretty good. He reports there is a toilet and a shower. ... and he says there are some trees. But, he did remeind me it was 1st come first serve, and has been known to fill up.
The week/weekend we are talking about is the same as the pow-wow over in Prineville, and that may have extra folks camping in the area.
I suspect anyone getting there earlier inthe week could set up camp. A few lat arrivals may be able to squeeze in near one of us there earlier. Still thisis less than ideal.
ANy thoughts?

It has become questionable as to my being able to make it at the time you will all be going. Besides my sister's wedding the week prior, as of this week I will be serving 4 months of jury duty. I have already gotten out of it 3 times because of my business and will have to serve this time no matter what. A couple of my jury days are days that I was planning on being at Richardsons. I will just have to play it by ear.

Thanks Tony,
The way ours works is that they give you four months of dates, whether there is a trial or not. You are required to call the night prior of each scheduled day to find out if you are needed the next day or not. They can prosecute you if you do not call or show. Although I would hope that they have better things to do than prosecute over something like that. But I live in a small town and my aunt is the judge's aide so I have no excuses LOL.

Well the dates are going to be what we as a group decide. If we cannot get consensuses then maybe a smaller group of us can just pick some dates and go and let others know out plans, but we would not guarantee they would find camping space ... etc.
Both pow-wows have on-site camping. Richardson's is still a possibility. Some BLM sites are further east and may be closer to Prineville area.
If some plan does not come together here soon, I may just book motel space near each pow-wow and go on one or two of the trips that each one offers. I would travel back to Corvallis for most weekdays inbetween. IF anyone else comes down to camp in the area, I would be interested in striking out to a site on our own if we had good intel and a map. I could plan to be there Monday or Friday during the week. I have tools but not a AWD vehicle.
Lets have folks speak up and say what, when, and where they would be willing to come. If they want to have a group camp, or more loosly coordinated gettogether each day, or even if they plan to stay in Motels.

Any dates will work for me...I do know that during the Madras Pow wow Richarsons is full up as they Usually put on a picnic for Rockers, butcher a fattened calf and the works but its elbow to elbow...As far as rental there I would assume one Might be able to reserve if they paid in advance. It is a lovely camp area with grass, trees, toilet and shower (Mens and Womens)...As soon as its decided just let me know on what days folks want to go into the Ochocos as I am still here to take ya'll digging and site seeing etc... -Dale Rhode

I was thinking the 26 of June till we get too tired, too overloaded, or too overwhelmed. Usually by Sunday or Monday or Tuesday its time to start thinkin about heading home, but the pow-wow starts on Wednesday, so maybe just hang around for a day or two of it? Alot depends on weather and temperature, also.

Ok, Dale's point about the Richardson's campground filling up is a good point. I think we might be OK because the Madras pow-wow is July 2-6, while the Prineville pow-wow is June 26-29, and that is further away. The info I have on the Madras pow-wow is: 2-6--MADRAS, OREGON: Show, "Fourth of July Pow Wow"; All American Rock & Gem Pow Wow Club of America; Jefferson County Fairgrounds; ; camping, daily field trips, dig for agate, jasper, thunder eggs, petrified wood for a fee, bring rockhounding tools, kids' rock toss/scramble, Country Kitchen, guest speakers, music, auction, bingo, door prizes, more than 75 vendors, rough rock, finished jewelry, equipment; contact Rocky McCall, 8330 272nd NW, Stanwood, WA 98292, (360) 629-2515; e-mail: rm711@tgi.net I called Rocky McCall, and he says that they will not finalize the trips until Memorial Day once the ranch owners clean out their pits. We might be able to get an update after Memorial Day. Trips will leave at 8am each day from the campground. The info I have on the Prineville pow-wow is: 26-29- PRINEVILLE, OR - Prineville Gem & Mineral Show; Crook County Fairgrounds. - We finally have the locations for the field trips. We just don't have the actual days finalized. One is to White Fir Springs for thundereggs, Hampton Butte for petrified wood and Joe McDonald's for petrified wood and thundereggs. Hope this helps. Rebecca So, the proposal to go on Thurs the 26th and extend into next week seems OK. Most folks would not be able to stay all week and the next weekend as well, but great if they can. It is about 30 miles from Madras to Prineville. We can do Richardson's one day, the pow-wow another day, and one of the pow-wow field trips on yet another day - or whatever combination of the above. I would likely come home Sunday (29th) and then return the following Friday July 4th. Unless we plan a trip with Dale for Monday 30th or Thurs July 3rd. I just need to conserve vacation time and don't want to leave my ancient kitty alone too long. Since I don't own a tent, I am thinking about getting a motel in Madras if folks will be camping at Richardson's. Otherwise I would get a motel over in Prineville. Also, If we are talking about setting up camp on the 26th, do we want to try to offer Richardson's some money to reserve space, or just count on mid-week vacancy? Do we have any idea how much it might fillup by the weekend if it is the week before the Madras pow-wow? Does anyone know what the cell phone coverage is like in the area? Would we be able to call each other easily/reliably if some were at Richardson's, and some were at a motel in Madras, and some were camping at the pow-wow in Prineville? I might be able to get over to Richardson's this weekend to check out the campground nd the cell phone situation. I could try to ask about reserving space. Anyway, the more folks who are willing to say if they are more or less sure they are coming on what dates and if they will camp or use a motel - well, the more we know the more we can plan for our mutual enjoyment and avoid unnecessary chaos. I think any kind of meal plan is too late to organize, but who knows, sometimes things come together quickly.

I don't feel we should camp at Richardson's if we are not going to be there the whole time. Dale said Walton Lake is a really nice place to camp, and it is also within minutes of several different digging spots, sounds like a winner to me!! That also puts us close to the pow wow in Prineville during that weekend, and I think maybe a day at Richardson's would be good for me. I like the idea of hitting several different spots, not just one place. I am still planning on leaving here on the 26th, and I plan on camping at Walton Lake that evening, unless someone makes more definitive plans before then. Thats my plan so far, but it is always subject to change as more info develops. As far as meals, I think that will develop as we go along. I am going on a week long salmon fishing trip next monday. If I do good, one night will be a salmon bbq, so wish me luck!!
